FC Porto have given Liverpool first refusal in the transfer battle for midfield talent Fabio Vieira, according to a report.

It’s safe to say that Liverpool’s most recent signing, Luis Diaz, has been a success. He also arrived from Porto during the January transfer window and has quickly settled in. For their next shopping trip, Liverpool could be looking the same way.

They have now built a squad capable of competing for major honours. On Saturday, they added the FA Cup to their trophy haul for the season, having already lifted the Carabao Cup.

With a Champions League final to look forward to and still in the running in the Premier League, Liverpool have enjoyed one of their strongest seasons in recent memory. But they could be looking to improve even further.

The signing of Diaz showed the benefits of squad depth in attack, just as the addition of Ibrahima Konate last summer has helped them in defence. Now, the next area they may want to add another option to is midfield.

In that regard, they could be one of the contenders to sign Diaz’s former teammate, Fabio Vieira. According to the Sunday Mirror, Liverpool have secured first refusal when it comes to the battle for his services.

They have developed a good relationship with Porto, having spent big to sign Diaz in January. A few months before, they also sold Marko Grujic to the Portuguese side after a productive loan spell.

Now, the two clubs could do business again for Vieira. About to turn 22, the midfielder has been a first-team player for Porto since 2020.

This season, he has contributed an impressive 16 assists and seven goals from 39 appearances in all competitions. It all culminated in a league title win for Porto.

If he is ready for the next step, Liverpool could give him the platform to compete for more honours.

To attain his signature, they would have to meet his €15million (£12.7m) release clause. What’s more, Porto would like to receive some add-ons.

Arsenal also in midfielder battle

Liverpool are not the only club interested in activating his clause. Arsenal are also in contention to take him to the Premier League, it is claimed.

The north London outfit are aiming to revamp their midfield in the summer. They are another club seeking squad depth as a return to European football looms.

Arsenal tried to sign Arthur Melo in January from Juventus, but the deal did not go through. Finding a player in that position remains an important item on their agenda.

But according to the Mirror, Porto will give Liverpool the right of first refusal for Vieira. Therefore, if any other club makes an offer, the Reds will be informed and given the chance to match it.

It would then be up to Vieira to pick his next destination and a move to Merseyside may appeal, given Liverpool’s strength across the board this term.

Fabio Vieira could be final piece of Liverpool puzzle

Liverpool have come on leaps and bounds in recent years under Jurgen Klopp. Over time, they have addressed different needs in their squad.

The signings of Virgil van Dijk for the defence and Alisson Becker in goal proved to be crucial in so many ways. The likes of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane have also been smart purchases.

Now, as proven by their runs in each competition this season, they have depth all over the field. But one more midfielder may be just what they need.

Thiago Alcantara has proven his worth this season after a testing debut campaign last time out. The creativity he provides adds another element to Klopp’s system.

But he and Jordan Henderson are both 31 years of age now. It could be an area of the squad for Liverpool to evolve. Just as with their attack, bringing in options to keep the regulars on their toes – and then succeed them – is a strong strategy.

The number of assists Vieira has provided this season is proof of what he could contribute, if he is able to adapt to the Premier League. And at the price quoted, he could be the latest in a long line of smart signings at Anfield.

Time will tell whether they make a move.
