Liverpool will be one of 36 teams to participate in the inaugural edition of the revamped Champions League in the 2024-25 season.

The Reds secured a return to Europe's premier competition thanks to a third-place finish in the Premier League, which came during a season in the Europa League due to a fifth-place finish in a below-par 2022-23 campaign. However, Liverpool's quest for a seventh Champions League triumph will begin in unfamiliar circumstances in September when the competition's new 'Swiss model' officially replaces the renowned group stage phase.

In the new format, all teams will play eight fixtures, four home and four away, in a league format. The top eight teams will qualify directly for the round-of-16 knockout stage, while the 16 teams who finish in positions 9th to 24th will battle it out in a two-legged tie for a place in the last-16.

The league stage of the Champions League will begin with Matchday 1 on September 17, with the eighth and final round of fixtures taking place at the end of January 2025.

Liverpool, led by new head coach Arne Slot, are in position to be handed a generous draw due to their seeding in Pot 1. They will be joined by Manchester City, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Barcelona.

However, one of the most significant changes to the new format is that all teams will be drawn to face two teams from each pot; two from Pot 1; two from Pot 2; two from Pot 3; and two from Pot 4.

For Liverpool, it means they could be drawn against 14-time winners Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich, Barcelona or Inter Milan. But they will not be able to face Manchester City, with teams from the same association not allowed to face one another until the round-of-16 stage.

The draw for the league format of the Champions League takes place on August 29.
