Liverpool could send Sepp van den Berg on loan elsewhere in the Premier League amid interest from further afield, a report has said.

The Dutchman has had limited experiences of first-team football following his Anfield arrival three years ago. In fact, he has only made four first-team appearances and none since December 2019.

He has instead featured for Liverpool’s Under-23s before embarking on an 18-month loan spell at Preston North End.

But as Van den Berg prepares for pre-season at Liverpool again, the Reds are carefully considering the defender’s future.

The Liverpool Echo reports that the Reds have received a host of loan interest in the centre-back.

Certain Premier League clubs – which the newspaper does not name – have come forward to sign Van den Berg. Teams in La Liga and the Bundesliga are also keen on the 20-year-old.

For now, though, the report reveals that the player can look forward to starting pre-season with the first team.

He did not get the chance to do that last season, with Liverpool confirming an extension to his spell with Preston in June last year – ahead of preparations for the 2021/22 term.

This time around, though, a decision over his future will come at a later stage in the summer. Reds manager Jurgen Klopp can therefore see first-hand the progress Van den Berg made in the past 18 months.

Liverpool initially sent the defender on loan to Preston in January 2021 as part of their acquisition of Ben Davies from Deepdale.

The Dutchman subsequently made 66 Preston appearances in his two spells there. While featuring mostly in his trademark centre-back role, he did play 24 times at right-back.

Liverpool chiefs reportedly feel ‘impressed’ at the Netherlands Under-21 international’s progress. They therefore want to advance his career with a potential step up in class next season.

Van den Berg needs Liverpool exit

While Van den Berg may have the chance to impress Liverpool in pre-season, he would be better off leaving. And a move to the Premier League would increase his re-sale value – if that is the route the Reds take with him.

The centre-back is one of four fringe defenders at Anfield alongside Davies, Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips.

Above the quartet, Ibrahima Konate has become a Liverpool regular, battling Joel Matip for a spot alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Joe Gomez is another option, although a lot of the 25-year-old’s game time last season came at right-back.

Van den Berg, though, is highly unlikely to stick around at Liverpool. His contract runs out in 2024 and so the Reds can bump up his value by allowing him to make an impact in the Premier League, which would consequently boost his Under-21 international career.

And it would be a win-win for the Anfield club if they then decide to move him up the pecking order.
