Liverpool fan ‘regains consciousness’ for the first time since attack before Champions League semi-final

Liverpool supporter Sean Cox has “regained consciousness” for the first time since being attacked prior to his team’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma in April, according to reports.

Mr Cox, a 53-year-old father of three from Republic of Ireland, was rushed to hospital after suffering head wounds when he was attacked outside The Albert pub near Anfield less than an hour before the game, which Liverpool won 5-2.

Daniele Sciusco, 29, and Filippo Lombardi, 20, have been charged with violent disorder while Mr Lombardi has also been charged with wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm in relation to the attack, which prompted condemnation from Liverpool and Roma.

A statement on Irish electrical industry website Electric.ie provided the update on Mr Cox, who works for Precision Cables. "Sean has regained consciousness and is undergoing dedicated rehabilitation,” it read. “Recovery is progressing positively but very slowly.

"His colleagues in Precision Cables are overwhelmed by the support and good wishes for Sean and his family that they receive on a daily basis.

"They would like once again to ask that you keep him in your prayers and that he will continue on his road to recovery."

Mr Cox sustained serious head injuries including a severe bleed to the brain in the attack, and underwent surgery before being put into an induced coma. Over €90,000 has been raised by well-wishers from around the world to help cover his medical costs.

Mr Sciusco admitted violent disorder, but Mr Lombardi pleaded not guilty to both charges.
