Liverpool fans left in awe as lost footage of first ever European match found
Liverpool supporters on social media have been left in awe after footage of the Reds first ever European match was found.
On Tuesday, the Reds made their Champions League return after a season away from Europe's elite club competition. Arne Slot's side came from 1-0 down to claim a 3-1 win against AC Milan, with goals from Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai comfortably sealing all three points for Liverpool at San Siro.
However, another result had Liverpool supporters on social media delighted when on Thursday, the Reds released footage of their first ever European match against Icelandic side FK Reykjavik from 1964 that had been found.

Taking to social media, Liverpool posted a video of highlights from the game, writing: "Lost footage of our first European match from 1964 has been unearthed," with the Reds crediting "The National Film Archive of Iceland".
The captions on the video of the footage read: "Lost footage of Liverpool's first European match has been unearthed. The game, against FK Reykjavik, took place on 17 August 1964. It was the 10th edition of the European Cup.
"Liverpool's first European goal was scored by Gordon Wallace after three minutes. Watched by little over 2,500 fans, Bill Shankly's team won 5-0 and went on to win the second leg at Anfield 6-1."
"Their first European voyage saw the Reds reach the semi-finals and the rest is history..." Fast forward to 1973, and Liverpool claimed their first of many European honors when they won the UEFA Cup against Borussia Monchengladbach 3-2 on aggregate.
And then in 1977, they claimed their first ever European Cup, when they again defeated Gladbach at the Stadio Olimpico 3-1, with goals from Terry McDermott, Tommy Smith and Phil Neal enough to make Liverpool European champions. They would go on to win the European Cup, now Champions League, five more times, winning the trophy in 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005 and 2019.
And it's safe to say Reds supporters on social media enjoyed the highlights package from Liverpool's clash against FK Reykjavik. "Any footage of a Shankly Liverpool side is special, and it's extra special because it's the first European match the club played in," wrote one fan on X.
Another added: "This is bloody amazing. love it when old footage gets found." A third said: "I've always been interested in lost media, and the discovery of this is heart-warming to me." And a fourth wrote: "Unreal footage absolute class."
Liverpool.com says: "The footage from the game against FK Reykjavik is nothing short of spectacular. It is incredible just how clear the image in the video is and it would be great to see Liverpool, a club with such a rich history, produce more posts on social media like this."
