Liverpool left itself with a lot of work to do in the transfer market last summer but signed four midfielders and successfully rejuvenated that department. Even though there is much more to come, each of the new arrivals played their part last season.

By far the most successful of the four additions Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch was the Argentine brought in from Brighton. At just $45m (£35m/€41m), he has proven to be a bargain.

But there could have been a second signing from Brighton made in the same summer. Uncharacteristically, Liverpool made a then-British record bid for Moises Caicedo, only for the Ecuadorian to choose a switch to Chelsea instead.

Liverpool might have got more from Caicedo but so far, it has not missed out on the evidence of what the 22-year-old produced during his debut campaign. The South American showed glimpses but little more to justify his price tag.

As Argentina knocked Ecuador out of the Copa America earlier this week, Mac Allister came out on top against Caicedo for the fourth time since the pair left the south coast last year. The Liverpool man plays for a better international team, of course, but this was the latest sign that the Reds came out on top with the deal they did — and the one they missed out on.

It didn't go unnoticed by Liverpool fans on social media. "Alexis Mac Allister schooling Moises Caicedo yet again," LFCBlinks posted. "Becoming a common theme of Mac Allister absolutely owning Caicedo," LiamMLFC said.

"4 games against Moises Caicedo since leaving Brighton. 4 wins for Alexis Mac Allister," SamueILFC wrote. Meanwhile, Everyone Liverpool added: "Mac Allister gave Masterclass whereas caicedo and enzo gave disasterclass made my day." And Anfield Voice said: "Mac Allister is showing the world that £35m can deliver more than £115m. I'm thrilled we have a player like Macca at Liverpool. What a steal of a signing!"

Liverpool.com says: Things could definitely have been different had Caicedo joined a stable project rather than one that seems to be all over the place at Stamford Bridge. In Mac Allister, though, Liverpool found a genuine gem. For $45m, in the current climate, you won't find a better deal anywhere in the Premier League in recent seasons.
