Alan Hansen 'seriously ill' in hospital as Liverpool releases statement on legendary former captain

Liverpool has confirmed that legendary former center-back and captain Alan Hansen is seriously ill in hospital with the Reds sending a message of support to the 68-year-old.

Hansen played for Liverpool for 14 years having joined the Merseyside giant from Scottish side Partick Thistle in 1977 and won eight league titles, three European Cups, and an additional five domestic cups. He represented the Reds a total of 620 times including four seasons where he was the Liverpool skipper.

A Liverpool statement read: "The club is currently in contact with Alan’s family to provide our support at this difficult time. Our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family. We will provide any further updates as we receive them in due course, and we request that the Hansen family’s privacy is respected at this time."

Liverpool.com says: Our thoughts are of course with Hansen and his family and hopefully he can quickly recover. He is one of the biggest Liverpool FC legends and is by all accounts a well-loved and hugely admired person. Everyone will be awaiting a positive update on his situation.
