Liverpool are reportedly ‘great favourites’ in the race to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo amid interest from their rivals Chelsea.

The Reds are in the market for a new midfielder or two. It is about time as it has been a few years since the last time they invested in the middle of the pitch.

Their need for new recruits is being reinforced with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner all out of contract later this year.

Fabinho and Jordan Henderson meanwhile remain under contract but their form has declined so Liverpool could do with recruiting some more youthful alternatives.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are huge admirers of Jude Bellingham but they face competition from Man City and Real Madrid,

Liverpool are clearly preparing in case they are snubbed by the Englishman and Caicedo is one player they are being linked with.

The 21-year-old joined Brighton last year and he has hit the ground running in the Premier League. The Ecuador international also shone at last year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Brighton often hold firm in the transfer market and will not let their star players leave on the cheap.

It was claimed last month that Liverpool have had a bid rejected for Caicedo and he is also being linked with Chelsea.

Now a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes is claiming that Liverpool are the ‘great favourites’ ahead of Chelsea in the battle for Caicedo.

They hint that Liverpool would love to get the deal completed this month as Caicedo is their ‘great wish’ for January.

The report notes that Caicedo’s growth has been ‘incredibly remarkable in a short time’ and Liverpool are ‘starting as favourites to become his new destination’.

Fichajes do not mention Chelsea but Ben Jacobs feels that the Londoners have Caicedo on their radar “more than Liverpool”.

“I’m still told he’s on Chelsea’s radar more than Liverpool’s, but the Reds have a historical interest in him since before he joined Brighton,” Jacobs wrote for Caught Offside.

“They seriously explored signing him, but it was a messy deal because Caicedo was represented by multiple agencies, there were loads of side-fees, and so even though the fee Brighton ended up paying was small, it was a complicated deal with other costs.

“I’m told this hasn’t really changed and so it’s unlikely Liverpool will bid for Caicedo this January, not just because of the need to negotiate with Brighton, but because of the other figures involved, this isn’t really how Liverpool do business.

“Right now, Brighton are quoting prices in excess of £70-80million, which is a huge outlay in what would generally be a complicated negotiation. This is why they haven’t bid and are unlikely to do so.”

Jacobs adds: “For me, Chelsea is a more likely destination than Liverpool for the Ecuador international.”

When discussing potential Bellingham alternatives, Jacobs suggested that Wolves star Matheus Nunes is a “long-term option”.

A January move is not on the cards as the midfielder “can’t play for Liverpool” because he has already played for Wolves and Sporting Lisbon this season.
