Liverpool have received a fitness boost with Trent Alexander-Arnold having avoided serious injury after being forced off early against Aston Villa at the weekend. But the right-back faces a race against time to be available for the Reds' blockbusting double header against Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Scans have revealed Alexander-Arnold suffered a low grade hamstring injury which prompted him to limp off after only 25 minutes of the 2-0 home Premier League win against Villa on Saturday evening.

It's understood that by signalling to the bench early that he was suffering from a problem, the player has prevented a more serious issue.

The 26-year-old is now set to sit out England's forthcoming closing UEFA Nations League double header against the Republic of Ireland and Greece.

Alexander-Arnold, though, hasn't been ruled out of Liverpool's next Premier League game at rock-bottom Southampton on Sunday, November 24.

Liverpool follow that with a home Champions League game against Real Madrid before entertaining Premier League champions Manchester City the next weekend. The Reds currently stand five points clear of City at the top of the table.

Alexander-Arnold has been playing through the pain barrier since suffering a side strain during England's UEFA Nations League win in Finland last month during, where he scored his third goal for this country.

The news the defender won't face a lengthy spell on the sidelines is a major boost to Arne Slot. The Liverpool boss is already without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, midfielder Harvey Elliott and forwards Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa. Jota is expected to be back in early December, although no return date has been placed on the returning trio.
