Liverpool hero Mark Lawrenson believes Manchester United's decision-makers are just waiting for another slump in form before sacking Erik ten Hag.

United has started the season disappointingly, winning just three of its first seven games, and one of those victories was against League One side Barnsley.

The Red Devils were thrashed by Liverpool at Old Trafford and also lost to Brighton in the Premier League, and could only muster draws against Crystal Palace and FC Twente.

A tough run of games awaits for United, with Tottenham visiting Manchester this weekend before trips to Porto and Aston Villa, and Lawrenson suggested that he thinks Ten Hag could be given his marching orders if his team doesn't pick up a series of positive results.

“I think the treatment of Erik ten Hag over the summer wasn’t great," Lawrenson told Sports Casting. "They were hawking around looking at potential suitors for Ten Hag’s job, I thought at one stage that he’d had enough and might just walk away. Since then, it looks like they’ve kissed and made up.

“I’m still not convinced with United but I do think they’ll be better this season. Will they be good enough to appease their owners, I’m not sure. I think if they have another slump, Ten Hag will get sacked. It seems like they’re waiting for that to happen.”

Lawrenson unsurprisingly feels more positive about Arne Slot's prospects at Liverpool, telling Anfield Index: “His start has been good. A slight slip up against Nottingham Forest but they were excellent. He’s not had to change much. Perhaps more in terms of keeping hold of the ball. They’ve got a very good chance of being in the top three and perhaps even winning the competition this season."
