Liverpool icon Luis Suarez makes career decision weeks after Inter Miami heartbreak
Luis Suarez has signed a new contract at Inter Miami. The 37-year-old, who swapped Anfield for the Camp Nou in July 2014, has penned a one-year extension with David Beckham's side after a brilliant debut campaign in the United States.
He featured 27 times for Inter Miami in the MLS this year, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists. Playing a crucial role in the frontline, alongside Lionel Messi, Suarez fired the Florida-based outfit to the top of the Eastern Conference.
Despite the Uruguay international's best efforts, he couldn't lead Inter Miami to glory, losing 3-2 to Atlanta in the first-round replay play-offs. Suarez also helped his side reach the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-finals and the Leagues Cup round of 16.

After such a successful first season at Inter Miami, the former Liverpool striker was awarded with a contract extension. Speaking to the official club website, Raúl Sanllehí, president of football operations, said: "In 2024, Luis brought to Inter Miami all of the elements that make him one of the greatest strikers of all time.
"He performed at an elite level for us, and we’re excited to see that continue next season. Luis was not only our leading scorer this season, but also a leader for the group. His impact cannot be understated."
Meanwhile, Suarez said: "I’m very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fanbase, which for us is like family. We feel very, very connected with them, and hopefully, next year, we can bring them even more joy."
Speaking to Spanish publication Marca in 2022, the Uruguayan was asked if his time in Europe was over after leaving Atletico Madrid to join Nacional on a free transfer.
"Yes," he replied. "Because I already did my European career and I left there very proud. I had many options, many, before coming to Nacional, but the meaning of coming to my country was also that: Groningen, Ajax, Liverpool, Barca, Atletico... What better career than that in Europe?
"For this reason, he could not finish, after Atletico, in another inferior team. That trajectory was perfect. I would have lowered the level and that's how I ended up at the highest level: Atletico. Hence, it made sense to come to Uruguay, not because it is a minor league, but to close a circle."
