Rennes forward Martin Terrier has reportedly been identified by Liverpool as a possible replacement if Sadio Mane leaves this summer.
Since the Reds lost the Champions League final at the weekend, there have been reports that the Senegal international has told the Premier League club that he wants to leave in the summer transfer window for a new challenge.
It is understood that Liverpool will ask for in excess of £25m for Mane – who still has one year left on his contract at Anfield – but will not allow him to leave until a suitable replacement has been found.
And now the Daily Mirror claims Liverpool are ‘tracking’ Rennes forward Terrier as they look to line up an attacker should Mane leave this summer.
The Mirror add that the Reds ‘see him as the ideal player to replace Mane’ with the Frenchman having previously played for Lille and Lyon before moving to Rennes in 2020.
The former France under-21 international has particularly impressed this campaign, scoring 21 goals in 37 appearances in Ligue 1, 19 of which came in open play.
Liverpool are likely to ‘welcome’ the fact that Terrier isn’t talked about ‘in the same bracket as other top European forwards’ with the Merseysiders more likely to get him for ‘a reasonable fee and without too much of a fight from other clubs’.
Meanwhile, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson finds it “very strange” that Mane would want to leave Liverpool when he is regularly starting.
On asked whether a U-turn could be on the cards for Mane after Liverpool lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final, Robinson told Football Insider: “I’m not sure.
“I just do not understand his mindset. He is leaving one of the best teams in the world.
“Yes, Bayern Munich are a huge club but playing in the Premier League with the best players in the world for a manager like Jurgen Klopp… I just don’t understand it.
“Listen, who knows what is going though the players head. Sometimes as a player you just want a fresh challenge.
“But from a football point of view, he is starting every week and playing well in one of if not the best teams in Europe.
“I cannot imagine Liverpool want to move it on. I find it very strange in all honesty. He will be hugely missed.”
