Liverpool hold ‘active interest’ in signing PSG megastar Kylian Mbappe after ‘private talks’ were held, though Man Utd could steal the show, per reports.

The 24-year-old can stake a genuine claim to being the world’s greatest player right now. Mbappe was virtually unstoppable for France at the World Cup and memorably scored a hattrick on the biggest stage of all in the final.

PSG teammate Lionel Messi and his Argentina side would ultimately prove victorious, though France’s near-miss certainly wasn’t through a lack of end product from their own talisman.

At club level, Mbappe is in the form of his life. His tally across all competitions this season stands at 27 goals in 28 matches. He’s also provided six assists.

However, uncertainty continues to surround the subject of where Mbappe sees his long-term future.

Indeed, he was heavily courted by Real Madrid in 2022 before quashing the speculation upon signing a new contract in Paris.

Yet the deal was only for three years and the third year is a player option. As such, Mbappe could become a free agent as early as the summer of 2024.

Fabrizio Romano reported in October Mbappe had buyer’s remorse and wished to exit PSG “as soon as possible”.

Despite being the main man in French football, PSG continue to disappoint in the Champions League.

There has also been rampant speculation he does not get along with Lionel Messi and Neymar who continue to hamstring PSG when it matters most given their complete lack of defensive effort.

PSG would obviously be reluctant to sell their megastar and hope Mbappe will commit to not only the final year in his deal, but a longer-term extension beyond that.

However, according to Football Insider, the prospect of a blockbuster move to the Premier League is very real.

Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea all eyeing Mbappe

They claim Mbappe held ‘private talks’ with Liverpool back in May of 2022 over a potential move to Merseyside.

Furthermore, it’s claimed Liverpool hold an ‘active interest’ in signing Mbappe and are ‘continuing to monitor the situation’.

The biggest issue Liverpool would face in the event Mbappe did push for an exit is obviously the transfer fee.

Owners FSG don’t readily part with their dollars and recently confirmed they’re no longer looking for an outright sale of the club.

Instead, they’re seeking outside investment and it’s perhaps only that route that could make a move to Liverpool financially viable.

Elsewhere, a second report from FI claims Man Utd ‘would be interested in swooping for Mbappe should a mega-money takeover materialise’.

Unlike FSG, the Glazer family are exploring an outright sale of their club. Two bids were officially received before last Friday’s ‘soft’ deadline – from British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.

A ‘marquee’ signing would reportedly be atop the agenda for whoever ousts the Glazers. There are few transfers in world football that would immediately get the fans on side more than the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.

Chelsea too get a mention, though all in all, it still seems highly unlikely Mbappe will be leaving Paris in 2023.

Of the three, moves to Man Utd or Chelsea would make the most sense. Both clubs are searching for a new centre-forward, while Liverpool committed to £85m for Darwin Nunez just seven months ago.
