Liverpool learn £50m transfer is on for superlative Fulham star who Klopp saw absolutely annihilate Reds trio
A bid of £50million should be enough for Liverpool to be able to sign Joao Palhinha from Fulham after proof emerged he would be an upgrade for their midfield.
Palhinha played all 90 minutes of Fulham’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night. Jurgen Klopp will undoubtedly have been keeping a close eye on him. After all, Palhinha is one of the many midfielders to be linked with Liverpool ahead of the summer transfer window.
James Milner looks set to sign for Brighton on a free transfer, while Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arthur Melo will be released by Liverpool at the end of the season as well.
And although they are set to miss out on the signing of Jude Bellingham, Liverpool will be looking to make some impactful additions to their midfield in the upcoming transfer market.
Links with Palhinha have been building in recent weeks. According to the latest update from Football Insider, it will take a bid of £50m or more to prise him away from Fulham.
The Cottagers only signed Palhinha from Sporting last summer, so will try their best to resist losing him after just one season. But the report reminds that Palhinha has caught the attention of Liverpool, as well as Man Utd, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Even so, money talks and £50m would comfortably be the largest transfer fee Fulham have ever received for a player. Their current record export is Ryan Sessegnon, who left for Tottenham in 2019 for around half of what Palhinha might now be worth.
Yet a figure of £50m should be affordable for a suitor like Liverpool, who now have first-hand evidence of how Palhinha could be an improvement on what they already have.
Indeed, during Wednesday’s match, Palhinha won seven tackles. In comparison, Liverpool’s starting midfield trio of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Curtis Jones only won six between them.
It shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise, since Palhinha actually leads the way in the Premier League overall this season for successful tackles.
But it might have been enough to convince Klopp of how useful the 27-year-old could be if Liverpool can manage to get their hands on him.
Fulham face battle to keep Joao Palhinha
Fulham, who are still in the top half of the Premier League table, will refer back to the fact that Palhinha’s contract with them is due to last until 2027 if anyone enters negotiations about signing him.
As mentioned, there is also interest in his signature from Man Utd, Chelsea and Bayern Munich. The latter are deemed to be a significant threat in the battle to sign him by Football Insider.
But having quickly established himself in the Premier League, it might make sense for Palhinha to continue in English football – whether that is with Fulham or one of his admirers.
Man Utd are considering another addition to their midfield after bringing in Casemiro and Christian Eriksen last summer. They currently have Marcel Sabitzer on loan from Bayern until the end of the season.
Chelsea, meanwhile, broke the British transfer record to add World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez to their own midfield in January. With N’Golo Kante approaching the end of his contract, though, they could be looking to invest further.
Yet it is Liverpool who have the greatest need, so it seems, which will make them the main ones to watch when it comes to trying to sign Palhinha.
