Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is reportedly set to win his race to be fit for the Champions League clash against Liverpool on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old has been sidelined for both club and country since suffering an ankle injury in Madrid's 3-1 defeat to AC Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu on November 5.

However, Spanish publication AS claims that Tchouameni, who is set to miss Sunday's La Liga clash against Leganes, is progressing well in his recovery and targeting a return to action when Madrid travel to Anfield next week for a repeat of the 2018 and 2022 Champions League finals.

The France international was expected to be sidelined until early December after it was revealed that he had suffered a sprain to his left ankle against Milan, though it is reported that he now has his sights set on aiding his side's defensive crisis in the weeks ahead.

AS claims that if fit, Carlo Ancelotti will start Tchouameni at the heart of defence alongside Antonio Rudiger after Eder Militao suffered a season-ending knee injury against Osasuna on November 9.

Asked earlier this month how his side will cope without the Brazilian defender, Ancelotti said: "We have resources. The youngsters are very good, like [Raul] Asencio and as an emergency, we have Tchouameni."

The reigning Spanish and European champions arrive at Anfield sitting 19th in the new-look Champions League table after just two wins from their opening four matches.

Liverpool, on the other hand, who will be without Alisson Becker for the tie, are the only side to have recorded victories in each of the first four games of the tournament.

However, they could be without Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota at Anfield on Wednesday night as they aim for a first win over Real Madrid since 2009.
