Liverpool legend Gerrard ‘in the frame’ for ‘sensational return’ to management with PSG
Steven Gerrard could be the next Paris Saint-Germain manager with the former Liverpool midfielder ‘in the frame’ for the job, according to reports.
The Liverpool legend was understood to be one of the candidates for the Leeds United job with Football Insider claiming on Monday that ‘one possibility that has been discussed is the combination of Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister taking charge until the end of the season’.
However, that will not be happening with former Watford boss Javi Gracia on the verge of taking over at Elland Road.
And now the Scottish Daily Express insist that ex-Rangers manager Gerrard – who was sacked by Aston Villa in October – is being ‘discussed for a sensational return to the dugout’ at Ligue 1 giants PSG.
Gerrard ‘is in the frame to boss [Lionel] Messi, Neymar and [Kylian] Mbappe’ and ‘has been discussed by the PSG hierarchy who are becoming increasingly frustrated with Christophe Galtier despite holding a five-point lead in Ligue Un’.
The report adds: ‘We can reveal that the Qatar ownership are interested in Gerrard whom they see as a major high profile figure who could enhance them next season.’
Speaking on BT Sport in late January on his desire to still be managing in the Premier League, Gerrard said: “I wish I still was! It’s the best league in the world, the most high-demand, the most pressurised environment to coach and manage in.
“We’re talking about a guy [Klopp] here who’s about to make 1000 games – congratulations to him – he’s an iconic figure round here and he’s someone who can handle that pressure. He’s probably lived through it before and he’s very experienced, but I think the league’s changed over the last decade since we were involved, there were teams down the bottom, with all due respect, who’d guarantee you’d win games of football.
“At the moment everyone is spending large amounts of money, everyone is improving their squads and any team is capable of beating everyone so I think that’s why there’s a lot more inconsistency in the league and a lot more demand on managers to get results.”
On whether it takes a toll, Gerrard added: “Of course it does [take a toll]. You’re very much all-in. You’re very much living it on a daily basis, 24 hours around the clock. I was speaking to the boys earlier about the tiredness that you feel, you feel like you’ve played yourself.
“When you get a result however way it goes you’re onto the next game, you’re watching games, you get very little rest and sleep so of course it’s going to take a toll. And of course if results aren’t going your way you’re going to feel that even more.”
