Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly watching three centre-backs as he looks for a new long-term partner for Virgil van Dijk.

The Merseyside giants have made major strides under Klopp, reaching the European Cup final last season.

But the defence has remained a concern for the Reds boss, and even though he has spoken highly of Dejan Lovren, the German is apparently considering an upgrade on the Croatian.

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles is understood to top the list, but Liverpool could face competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham.

If they can’t tempt Lascelles to join, Liverpool may turn to Leicester’s Harry Maguire, who is currently at the World Cup with England, and impressed in their opening match of the finals against Tunisia.

Completing the trio of targets is Burnley star James Tarkowski, who has been so impressive during his time in the top flight with the Lancashire club.

Klopp will feel his team are only two or three signings away from a potential title challenge. Despite ruling English football in the Seventies and Eighties, Liverpool haven’t been champions since 1990.
