Real Madrid have won the race with Liverpool for Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni following a breakthrough in negotiations, according to a report.

The Frenchman has become one of the most sought-after players on the European market after his recent rise. Having moved from Bordeaux in January 2020, he is closing in on 100 Monaco appearances.

However, Tchouameni is now unlikely to reach that milestone. He will instead try to make his mark in the Spanish capital, with Madrid agreeing a deal for him.

Indeed, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein reports that Madrid have convinced Tchouameni and Monaco with a package worth more than €100million (£85million).

The clubs are therefore now finalising the paperwork ahead of an official announcement by Los Blancos.

The transfer is a blow for Liverpool, who held interest in Tchouameni as they look to beef up their midfield.

Meanwhile, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims that the Frenchman will sign as part of a double deal at Madrid.

The La Liga champions will announce a new one-year deal for Luka Modric before confirming Tchouameni’s arrival.

Croatia star Modric won his fifth Champions League title with Madrid last month in the 1-0 win over Liverpool in Paris.

Romano also details the timeline of events that has led to Madrid snapping Tchouameni up.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reportedly chatted with the player to outline the Anfield project to the midfielder.

Paris Saint-Germain in fact made the most financially lucrative offer. However, 22-year-old Tchouameni had his heart set on Madrid. He agreed personal terms with Los Blancos in Paris before the Champions League final.

The transfer fee remained the only pressing issue and the silence on that part of the deal put the move in some doubt.

That was until Madrid and Monaco made a breakthrough in negotiations on Monday.

Madrid continue French transfer push

Having lost out on Kylian Mbappe after he snubbed Los Blancos to sign a new PSG contract, Madrid had funds to use for a signing elsewhere.

Tchouameni was their top target and he is the second France prospect they have added in successive seasons.

Indeed, he will work alongside Eduardo Camavinga, who Madrid signed from Rennes.

Tchouameni made his France debut in September and has made eight caps since then. He played 62 minutes of Monday’s 1-1 Nations League draw with Croatia.

Camavinga, 19, is still predominantly with France’s Under-21 squad but Madrid have two exciting players who can lead their midfield forward after Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro move on.
