Liverpool have reportedly offered Roberto Firmino a new contract despite the fact that the striker is no longer first-choice.

The Brazilian was thought to be surplus to requirements at Anfield after the arrivals of both Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, even though Sadio Mane left for Bayern Munich over the summer.

However, Jurgen Klopp wants to keep the trusty 31-year-old around after his impressive resurgence this season.

The striker started only 10 Premier League games last term, scoring five times. However, things have been very different this time around.

Firmino has already made 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals and adding four assists.

The forward has also shown his versatility to Klopp by playing as a No.9 or as a creative midfielder. That versatility has been key as the Reds have been forced to cope with injuries to Diaz and Diogo Jota.

The former is expected to be back after the World Cup break. However, Jota could still be sidelined until early February.

And with Firmino proving such an asset again, Liverpool are keen to tie his future down.

Salary cut on the cards for Firmino

Indeed, Football Insider reports that talks are underway over a new deal, with the Reds offering a lower salary than Firmino’s current agreement – which is believed to be worth around £180,000-a-week.

However, there is some good news for the Brazilian, who can hike up his pay from performance-related bonuses based on appearances and goals.

Klopp still remains a big fan of the player, who still has plenty of value despite turning 32 next year.

Firmino is out of contract at the end of the season and can sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club from January 1.

In total, he has played 348 games for the Reds with 107 goals and 78 assists since joining in 2015.
