Liverpool are reportedly exploring a deal for Matheus Nunes, thanks to a ‘commitment’ with the Portuguese when he signed for Wolves in the summer.

When Wolves managed to snare Nunes in the summer, they beat a number of other sides to the punch. West Ham United and Liverpool were among the clubs that were also pursuing him.

As such, it was quite the coup for Wolves to land him, for a fee in the region of £44million.

He joined with a lot of promise, with Pep Guardiola referring to him as “one of the best players in the world today”.

To this point, despite people from big clubs like Liverpool and Man City viewing him as a big talent, that promise has failed to shine through.

In the 14 Premier League games Nunes has played this season, he is yet to score, and he has just one assist. That might not seem too bad if he was effective in other areas, and the club were in a good position.

However, to say they are not in a good position at the moment would be an understatement. The Molineux outfit currently find themselves 19th in the league.

That is a massive fall from grace for a side that registered back-to-back seventh-placed finished within the past four seasons, along with another 10th-placed finish last term.

Nunes on Liverpool’s radar

Despite Nunes’ lack of effectiveness to this point, Liverpool have not been put off the transfer. Instead, they have returned to their interest in him.

According to The Mirror, the Reds are looking into the possibility of signing the Wolves midfielder. That he would be much cheaper than major target Jude Bellingham is mentioned.

However, being cheaper than a very expensive player is hardly a reason to go and sign someone.

There are a few other reasons that Liverpool are potentially planning on snaring Nunes, though. One of those is that Wolves apparently told him he would be allowed to leave for another club once he got acclimatised to the Premier League.

Of course, it seems strange that they would let such a big-money signing leave so soon. However, Liverpool may sense the opportunity for an easy deal if that is true.

It would not be a surprise if Nunes thrived in their system, rather than Wolves’. A provision from the Reds’ previous pursuit has cropped up in their current interest, too.

Indeed, there is a suggestion that Jurgen Klopp’s side ‘made a commitment to bid for him’ again after failing to Wolves in the summer.

Of course, it’s unlikely they have to stick to that condition if they don’t want to. However, the promise Nunes showed prior to his time at Wolves, and for Portugal, likely means they are keen on doing so.

While it would be a strange transfer if it were to go through in January, Liverpool’s need for a midfield addition has been clear. If Nunes can come in and perform, then it will seem a good piece of business.
