Liverpool power rankings as most important Arne Slot player clear and Luis Diaz climbs 5 places
Two competitive games under his belt for Liverpool: two wins. It is still early in Arne Slot's tenure but the signs have been very promising so far. His side is keeping clean sheets and looks capable of some exciting attacking moments.
The word of the summer was "control" and that is what Slot wants to implement at Anfield. His team only gave up one big chance against Brentford while creating more than enough to win comfortably.
Perhaps the only thing that was missing from the result was getting the second goal a little earlier to kill the hopes of the opponent even sooner. Really, though, having succeeded Jurgen Klopp, Slot would have taken a 100 percent record of any kind at this stage.

So who rose and who fell in matchweek two? We've taken a look at the current Liverpool power rankings after Gameweek 2 of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Liverpool power rankings - Week 2
1. Mohamed Salah
Liverpool has plenty of firepower in its attack but Mohamed Salah is the man who often ties it all together. The Egyptian is looking sharp again and he already has two goals in two games in this season.
His contract situation needs resolving — you won't need reminding of that again — but there is no hint that he wants out. When he is playing this well and leading the Liverpool side in the way he is, why would there be?
He's enjoying his soccer and he remains the Reds' most important player. A much more rounded forward now than when he arrived, the explosive pace might have gone but his attacking instincts certainly haven't.
2. Trent Alexander-Arnold
3. Diogo Jota
4. Luis Diaz
Up five places from last week, the Colombian was exceptional for the most part against Brentford. The big question with him has always been whether or not he could match the output required for a Liverpool forward.
Under Slot, he appears to have gone up a level, albeit it is still early days. Diaz clinically finished the counter-attack that saw the Reds open the scoring at Anfield on Sunday and then played his part in plenty of nice moves. For now, he is firmly ahead of Cody Gakpo in the pecking order.
5. Virgil van Dijk
6. Ryan Gravenberch
7. Alisson
8. Dominik Szoboszlai
9. Ibrahima Konate
Replacing Jarell Quansah at half-time at Portman Road, Ibrahima Konate looked to be a man with a point to prove against Brentford. Selected ahead of Quansah, who had missed some training sessions in the week leading up to the game, he fully justified that decision with a superb performance.
Others stood out as well and it has only been a game and a half, but Konate looks to have regained his sharpness having ended last season poorly. At his best, he is undoubtedly one of the most promising central defenders in the world. Like so many Liverpool players, though, the only question is whether or not he can successfully avoid injury.
10. Alexis Mac Allister
11. Andy Robertson
12. Cody Gakpo
13. Harvey Elliott
14. Darwin Nunez
15. Curtis Jones
Yet to play a minute this season having spent the Ipswich game on the bench and since having picked up an injury, it has been a frustrating start to the new campaign for Curtis Jones. He was one of the players who seemed most excited about the change of manager in the summer but hasn't been able to capitalize on that so far.
His chance will come but unfortunate and untimely injuries have been a theme of his senior career to date. If he is going to fulfill his vast potential then that needs to stop at some point. If it does, Jones is absolutely perfect for what Slot is looking for from a number eight — and possibly a number six too.
16. Jarell Quansah
17. Conor Bradley
18. Kostas Tsimikas
19. Wataru Endo
20. Joe Gomez
Back in the matchday squad for this game with Jones out injured, Joe Gomez still didn't get a look in. If Slot needed a defensive change, Kostas Tsimikas would have come on ahead of him at left-back, Conor Bradley did come on ahead of him at right-back, and Quansah was the third-choice center-back.
Nonetheless, there will be game time for him this season. It is easy to feel frustrated if you are out of the side at the moment but there is only one more match — Manchester United — before the September international break. After that, the Champions League kicks in and the schedule looks incredibly packed. Liverpool doesn't have enough defenders to lose Gomez before Friday.
