Tottenham are reportedly in growing jeopardy of losing one of their star names in 2023, according to one pundit, amid claims of transfer interest from Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool.
Antonio Conte’s side are enjoying a solid season so far. Despite not quite playing at their consistent best, they are one game away from securing their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. And Spurs are also riding high in the Premier League, sitting third and just five points behind Arsenal.
Indeed, Conte has assembled a really strong squad at the club with options aplenty throughout the team. And the signings of both Dejan Kulusevski, in January, and Richarlison over the summer, have significantly strengthened their attacking options.
However, one man who has had his nose put out of joint, somewhat, by the arrivals is Son Heung-min. The popular South Korea star has not been at his best this season, despite playing regularly under Conte. He has just five goals in 17 appearances so far this season, cutting a somewhat unhappy figure at times.
And he was surprisingly left on the bench during last month’s 6-2 thumping of Leicester City.
His deal at Tottenham is currently due to expire in summer 2025, while the club also retains a one-year option on that deal.
However, speculation has recently seen Son linked with a move away from the club. Per German outlet, Sport 1, both Liverpool and Real Madrid are keeping a close watch on the player with a view to a possible move.
Brazil reckons Son may look to quit Tottenham
Indeed, links to Liverpool have grown in recent days with Klopp reportedly a huge admirer of the player. Son shared the Golden Boot award with Mohamed Salah last season and the German coach reportedly dreams of pairing the two stars up together at Anfield.
Prising him away from Tottenham, however, would be incredibly difficult. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is a notoriously tricky customer to deal with and he would not allow the 30-year to leave without a fight.
Now Scottish broadcaster and former Spurs striker Alan Brazil is tipping Son to push for a move away in 2023.
He reckons a move away from Tottenham may tempt him with the player capable of playing for the world’s top sides.
He told talkSPORT [27/10, 9:54 am]: “I’ve always said I hope Harry [Kane] goes nowhere. I hope Harry stays at Spurs. Son I think is different. I think he could move.”
Spurs need a happy and productive Sonny
Despite not being at his best, Spurs really need Son firing on all cylinders if they are to enjoy a successful season. The player is huge for Tottenham both in terms of commercial value, but moreso his ability on the pitch. Put simply, if he plays well, Tottenham play well.
And while he’s not been at his best, there is absolutely no reason Tottenham would look to sell the player. And least not, not to a top-four, or even potential title rival in future seasons.
The main issue, though, could come if – like Brazil suggests – Son looks to push for a move away. In that scenario, the story around the player may change.
That said, Levy would make it near-impossible for the player to leave. Much like the no-nonsense Tottenham chief did when Manchester City came calling for Harry Kane in summer 2021, Levy would make any sort of deal with Liverpool furiously difficult.
Son, a £22m signing from Hamburg in 2015, is now in his eighth season with Tottenham, having scored 136 goals in 342 appearances.
