Liverpool will step up contract talks with Diogo Jota in the hope of extending his stay at Anfield as one of the senior front men, a report has claimed.

The Portugal star moved to Merseyside from Wolves in an instalments-based £45million deal in 2020. He has since continued to light up the Premier League and Liverpool with 34 goals in 85 games.

Jota still has three years left on his current deal, but Liverpool feel he fits perfectly into manager Jurgen Klopp’s long-term plan.

The Daily Telegraph therefore claims that Liverpool want to hand him a bumper new deal to reward his progress.

Jota can expect a ‘significant’ uplift in his salary following his role in cementing the future of the Reds’ attack.

It became clear that Liverpool needed to work on their front line after enjoying several seasons with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

And Jota arrived as the first sign of change from Klopp as he looked to bring the average of his front line down.

Luis Diaz then moved to Merseyside in January, before Darwin Nunez’s club-record move from Benfica this summer.

Liverpool of course still have Salah, who has signed a bumper new contract himself until 2025.

Firmino is embarking on what looks like his final season at Anfield before he leaves as a free agent. Sadio Mane may have left for his new challenge, but Liverpool have already moved on.

And Jota is a vital part of the evolution Klopp has orchestrated in recent transfer windows.

Diogo Jota improving at Liverpool

Jota scored 13 goals in his debut season at Anfield, which proved a tale of two halves due to a knee injury.

Indeed, he enjoyed a flying start to his Liverpool career before spending almost three months on the sidelines.

After his return, he proved vital in pushing Liverpool to a top-four Premier League finish which looked highly unlikely at one stage.

Jota then kicked on last term, netting 21 goals in 55 games.

This season, he will look to finish with an even higher tally of goals. Jota’s Liverpool form has also seen him become a star man in Portugal’s attack.

He will look to star at the World Cup later this year and could line up against Liverpool’s Uruguay star Nunez in the group stages.
