Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has issued a five-word verdict on the decision to award Liverpool a penalty against AFC Bournemouth. The Reds were awarded a spot kick on the half-an hour mark.

Referee Darren England pointed to the spot, having concluded that Lewis Cook had fouled Cody Gakpo in the box. VAR didn’t intervene to overturn the on-field call.

Mohamed Salah stepped up and made no mistake to give Arne Slot’s side a crucial 1-0 lead. It was an advantage that Liverpool took into the half time break.

Replays of the challenge caused debate online as to if a penalty should have been awarded. Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, Dean gave his thoughts on the decision, and appeared to agree that it was right to award Liverpool a penalty.

He simply said: “There’s definitely a clip there.” The decision was one that left the home fans in the Vitality Stadium angry, with the majority of those watching making their feelings known.

Should Liverpool keep their advantage over the Cherries, then it will move them nine points clear of second-placed Arsenal at the top of the table. The Gunners are in action on Sunday when they take on reigning champions Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium (4.30pm kick-off).

Liverpool are back in action in midweek when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield in the second leg of the Carabao Cup. The Reds are 1-0 down after the second leg and will look to turn the tie around in the home leg.
