Ryan Sessegnon is Liverpool’s primary target at left-back with the club having not made an approach for Atletico Madrid’sTheo Hernandez.

Coutinho: I wanted to be here

Sessegnon is viewed as Liverpool’s long-term answer on the left side of their rearguard. James Milner has operated at fullbackadmirablythis season, and as with Trent Alexander-Arnold deputising for Nathaniel Clyne on the opposite flank, the club believe the 16-year-old can act as the vice-captain’s understudy while he continues his development.

Alberto Moreno, who has been afforded just eight starts in all competitions this season, is expected to departin thesummerwith the club already fielding multiple enquiries about the Spaniard.

Attempts to secure Sessegnon would not be seamless, though, as the division’s top teams have heavily scouted him, with Arsenal especially interested.

The England youth international will certainly not be short of options ahead of next season, but could stillopt to continue his advancement at Craven Cottage.

Special report on Liverpool's Academy

While nothing is concrete yet, there is confidence at Liverpool that theChampionship’s youngest-ever goalscorer will choose to further develop under Jurgen Klopp’s guidance.

The Merseysiders have demonstrated their dedication to youth through their Talent Group project, which bridges the gap between the Academy and the first-team.

Alexander-Arnold, with 11 appearances thus far in his breakthrough campaign,is one such benefactor of this approach and is Sessegnon’s team-mate for England’s Under-19s.

Liverpool envision a future of both supremely talented teenagers speeding up and down the flanks for the club as they do for their country.
