Liverpool are reportedly among two Premier League clubs ‘casting an eye over’ Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha amid his great form for the Londoners.
The 27-year-old has spent the majority of his career in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon prior to his move to the Premier League in the summer.
Fulham pulled off a coup to recruit the midfielder following their promotion. Man Utd and Wolves were linked with him but the Londoners got him for around £20m.
Marco Silva’s side have been one of the surprise packages in the Premier League this term as they are sitting pretty in the top half.
Palhinha has been key to their success as he has arguably been one of the league’s best summer signings.
Liverpool are known to be in the market for a couple of midfielders so reports linking Palhinha with a move to Anfield are not too surprising.
The Reds would love to sign Jude Bellingham but it will take a huge outlay to get him ahead of Man City and Real Madrid.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can compete financially with their rivals, especially while their current owners are looking to sell the club.
They are seemingly not putting all of their eggs in one basket as several alternatives have also been mentioned. Among them are Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.
But a report from GiveMeSport has claimed that Liverpool ‘could make a shock move’ for Palhinha.
This has come about as the website is looking at ‘some sub-plots taking place in the backdrop at big clubs this winter’.
They note that Liverpool have had the 27-year-old ‘on their radar’ even before he joined Fulham.
The out-of-form Premier League club face a transfer battle though as rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also ‘casting an eye over him at the moment’.
‘One of the league’s most consistent performers this season, Fulham know they have an absolute gem in this 27-year-old Portuguese international and absolutely do not want to lose him,’ the report from GiveMeSport stated.
‘He joined in the summer for £20m and the Whites have had a great season – at their current rate they might even have a chance of qualifying for European football.
‘He’s loving his role in the team but we should be anticipating knocks at the door in the summer.
‘His consistency is almost unrivalled across the league for players in this position and it is understood that Liverpool and Tottenham are two of the clubs casting an eye over him at the moment.
‘Liverpool had him on their radar even before his switch to Craven Cottage.’
