Trent Alexander-Arnold has been accused of being “arrogant” as the Liverpool defender is started by Jurgen Klopp “no matter what he does”.

The defender has been at the brunt of criticism this season amid Liverpool’s difficult start to the new campaign.

There’s no doubting Alexander-Arnold’s talents going forward, especially with his crossing and ability to create chances for his teammates.

Every Premier League club’s highest-rated player of the season so far…

But his defensive capabilities have often been questioned and this has come to the fore again in recent weeks.

Alexander-Arnold struggled earlier this week as Napoli tore apart Liverpool in their opening group game in the Champions League.

The Serie A side were 3-0 up at the break and they eventually ran out 4-1 winners on the night.

This was arguably Liverpool’s worst performance during Klopp’s time in charge and with their ongoing injury issues, he has a major job on his hands to get his side back on track.

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand named Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez as players who shocked a “lack of effort and desire” against Napoli:

“It was an embarrassing first 45 minutes for Liverpool, particularly defensively,” Ferdinand said after the defeat to Napoli.

“What you can’t accept as a manager or as a player is a lack of effort and desire. When people don’t run or don’t have the desire to get back.

“Gomez makes the mistake but you’ve got to get back and help your team-mates and Trent didn’t do that.

“Liverpool got teased, they got embarrassed, they got shown up. This result has been coming too. They were lacklustre and lacked grit, determination and desire.”

Liverpool summer signing Calvin Ramsay is currently Alexander-Arnold’s backup at right-back.

He is currently out of action with a back injury and he is not due to return until the end of this month.

Gomez is sometimes operated at right-back but centre-back is his favoured position.

Rob Segal is a football agent who has worked with the likes of Harry Winks and Brandon Williams.

He thinks Alexander-Arnold has displayed his “arrogance” in recent weeks:

“Liverpool have major injury problems which haven’t helped and a player like Trent Alexander-Arnold probably needs a prolonged rest,” Segal told Caught Offside.

“However, because of his standing within the club, you can feel his arrogance when he is slowly running back to goal.

“Alexander-Arnold knows that no matter what he does, right or wrong, he is likely to start week in, week out.

“It is no secret that Alexander-Arnold is a lot better going forward than he is defensively, so his weaknesses need to be covered and unfortunately for Klopp, at the moment, none of his side’s backline are playing particularly well.

“The timing of their drop-off in form has been really unfortunate.”
