Liverpool star Andy Robertson sends signed Firmino shirt to Liverpool young fan for the best reason ever

Welcome to the latest episode of Footballers Being Nice (sponsored by Juan Mata). This week’s subject is Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson, who sent a young Liverpool fan possibly the greatest letter ever.

Seven-year-old Alfie Radford donated his pocket money towards a food bank collection outside Anfield ahead of the Reds’ Champions League game with Porto. It was part of the Fans Supporting Foodbanks movement; a partnership between the Everton Supporters’ Trust and Liverpool supporters’ group, Spirit Of Shankly.

Word got back to the 23-year-old Scot, who joined Liverpool last summer from Hull, and he wrote a personalised letter to young Alfie, including one incredibly humble gesture.

“You’ve done something amazing for other people and expected nothing in return for it. Because of that I want to make sure it is rewarded,” Robertson wrote to young Alfie.

And instead of sending him a ‘Robertson 26’ shirt like most players would, the left-back, in a rare moment of humility from a top flight footballer, he sent one of his team-mate’s shirts instead.

He added: “I’ve got one of Roberto Firmino’s match shirts from this season and asked him to sign it for you, by way of a thank you for what you did for the food banks. Let’s be honest Alfie, no one wants the left back’s shirt – which is why I got you Bobby’s instead. Hope that’s okay.”

Alfie’s proud dad Tom tweeted a photo of his beaming son holding up the shirt and the letter that Robertson sent the young Reds supporter.

If only more fans were like Alfie and more players were like Robertson.

Dear Alfie,

It’s Andy Robertson here from Liverpool.

I saw on Twitter that you did something very special for the foodbanks at Anfield last night.

I remember from being your age just how important pocket money is and how there’s hundreds of things you could have bought for yourself with it.

For you to give that up for people who are having a tough time and need some help to get by is absolutely amazing. Let me tell you now, that is brilliant from you and sets an example to the rest of us that showing a little care and thought for others is really important – it’s also very Liverpool! Foodbanks is a cause very close to my own heart and what you’ve done will stay with me for a long time.

Anyway – the point of this letter. You’ve done something amazing for other people and expected nothing in return for it. Because of that I want to make sure it is rewarded.
