Liverpool star angrily confronted by Ipswich man as Wataru Endo enacts revenge
Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 18 matches as they thrashed Ipswich Town on Saturday. Cody Gakpo scored a brace after goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah as the Reds ran out 4-1 winners.
It was a dominant display from Arne Slot’s men against the Premier League strugglers as Liverpool maintained their six-point lead at the top of the table.
Yet at one point it looked like the Reds were poised to open up an ever greater advantage as Nottingham Forest were thrashed 5-0 away at AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal overcame a 43rd-minute red card to secure a narrow 1-0 win against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But you already know all that, of course. So, as always, the ECHO’s here to fill you in on some of the moments that might have gone under the radar in Liverpool’s latest victory…
Gravenberch leaves Van Dijk in awe
Ryan Gravenberch was a star performer for the Reds against the Tractor Boys in a dominant midfield performance. And he showed all his strengths in one piece of play in the first half that left Virgil van Dijk in awe.
Receiving possession in midfield, Gravenberch turned well only to immediately be put under pressure by not one but three Ipswich players. Demonstrating quick footwork, he skipped away from one and still managed to retain possession despite a second - Sam Morsy - pulling him back.
Then sprinting away from the Ipswich captain with ease before spreading the ball to Ibrahima Konate, Van Dijk watched on and applauded at the eye-catching play from his compatriot.
Don’t mess with Macca
Not content scrapping with Gravenberch, Morsy also locked horns with Alexis Mac Allister shortly before half-time after taking issue with the Argentina international shortly before half-time.
The Egypt international had actually been penalised for a foul on Mac Allister, but was left unimpressed by the Argentine’s reaction as he stood over him after Morsy fell to the floor and nudged him with his leg.
Morsy grabbed Mac Allister’s leg before angrily getting to his feet and confronting the midfielder, who had now been shoved by Omari Hutchison. Gakpo would then intervene as he attempted to stop the Egyptian from confronting his Reds team-mate.
But that did not stop him from angrily addressing the Liverpool man over the Dutchman’s shoulder, as Gakpo escorted him away.
‘We hate Nottingham Forest…’
With Liverpool leading 3-0 at half-time, the home crowd was understandably in good spirits. And they were bolstered even more so as long-serving stadium announcer George Sephton read out the half-time scores in the Premier League’s 3pm kick-offs.
Nottingham Forest were losing 1-0 to Bournemouth, while Arsenal were being held by Wolves - meaning the Reds were extending their lead at the top of the table as things stood. Cue cheers from the Anfield crowd.
Alas, these were replaced by boos soon afterwards as supporters were then informed that Everton were winning 1-0 away at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Sadly, Arsenal would emerge victorious at Molineux, ensuring there was not the same reaction when the final scores were read out an hour later. Not even a 5-0 thrashing for Forest was enough to warrant the same cheers that had been heard at the break, perhaps demonstrating supporters’ true feelings about who they consider legitimate title challengers.
Endo enacts revenge
Wataru Endo was on the receiving end of a nasty challenge from Julio Enciso against Ipswich, as the substitute caught him in the face with his knee. Liverpool’s medical team were swiftly called on to assess the Japanese, while the Paraguayan was booed after only being booked.
After treatment and a lengthy pause in play, Endo was considered fine to continue and applauded as he got to his feet and briefly left the field.
And he then ensured it was business as usual as he instantly flung himself into a challenge on Enciso soon after rejoining the field of play, prompting cheers and applause from the home crowd as the Ipswich man was sent sprawling to the floor.
Endo would later also be penalised for a foul on Enciso as he challenged the Paraguayan from behind before falling on top of him - again earning cheers from the crowd. Only the Japanese will be able to answer whether such an altercation was coincidental.
Liverpool dugout fume
Liverpool were denied a clean sheet by a last-minute Jacob Greaves goal from a corner, with Slot admitting it was the only downer on the result as he bemoaned the first goal they had conceded from a corner all season.
Ever the perfectionists, the Reds were understandably displeased at conceding in such a way. Especially Aaron Briggs.
Having joined the club as first team individual development coach in the summer, he is also responsible for set-pieces. Getting up from his seat in the dugout, he stood alongside Slot as the corner came in.
And as Ipswich scored, an angry Briggs turned away, screamed and punched the air in frustration at the manner in which the Reds had been undone.
