Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been told that he couldn’t handle Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in midweek.
The Reds beat Napoli 2-0 on Tuesday night, thanks to goals from Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez, but the Serie A side still claimed top spot in their group on goal difference.
Napoli are leading the Serie A standings in Italy with Luciano Spalletti’s men yet to lose a game in the league and they still offered an attacking threat at Anfield.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have had a nightmare start to the new Premier League campaign with the Reds currently sitting in ninth position ahead of their Sunday clash against Tottenham.
Alexander-Arnold has come in for a lot of criticism from pundits and former players this season for some of his defensive displays, while his attacking output has also been down.
Former Napoli striker Roberto Carlos Sosa claims the Liverpool defender “did not understand anything” when coming up against Kvaratskhelia on Tuesday.
“At Anfield Napoli played a great game,” Sosa told Area Napoli.
“We saw a midfield up to the situation, taking into account that in front of them there was Liverpool, in attack Firmino did not touch the ball, on the other side Alexander Arnold, who is the best side in Europe, against Kvaratskhelia did not understand anything.
“Liverpool won the game on two loose balls; it is easy for a coach to work on this aspect.
“(That’s) without considering that the goals came ten minutes from the end when the first place was already acquired.”
And former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher reckons Alexander-Arnold could find it difficult to get into Gareth Southgate’s starting XI at the World Cup even if Reece James and Kyle Walker miss the tournament.
Carragher said on Sky Sports recently: “Trent’s situation is helped by the injuries to Kyle Walker and Reece James and if those two players are out he’s a cert to go in the squad – but I still think he’ll find it really difficult to get into the team.
“I think Kieran Trippier would be ahead of him in Southgate’s eyes. If you take one of Walker and James, there’s still enough room for Trent to go but if those players miraculously made themselves fit or Southgate wanted to take a chance or risk with their fitness it may be difficult for Trent in terms of making the squad.
“I don’t see him making the team if Trippier stays fit, so it all hinges on how Southgate sees those injuries.”
