Liverpool are reportedly ready to step up their efforts to bring former Manchester United and Leicester goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler to the club as back up to Alisson.

The 34-year-old is currently in his second stint with 2. Bundesliga side Hannover, having enjoyed the best spell of his career in his first spell between 2010-16. During that time he was also capped six times by Germany.

The veteran stopper is also a World Cup winner with Germany, having been in the squad which won the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

Zieler actually had a spell at United as a youngster from 2005-10. However, he never actually made an appearance for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men in that time.

The keeper did return to England with Leicester though, making nine Premier League appearances for the Foxes during the 2016-17 campaign.

And now German publication Bild reports that Liverpool are looking to bring the German back to England again as experienced back-up for their Brazilian No.1.

Republic of Ireland stopper Caoimhin Kelleher currently holds that role, but he is keen for regular first-team, with the likes of Tottenham, Brighton and Brentford all showing an interest.

Zieler open to back-up role

The report adds that Zieler is open to being second fiddle at a Premier League with the likelihood of appearances in the domestic cup competitions.

Reported sporting director target Jorg Schmadtke knows Zieler well, having signed him for Hannover back in 2010 when he held at similar role at the German club.

Schmadtke’s proposed appointment has taken German journalists and pundits by complete surprise, with many feeling he is not suited to a club of Liverpool’s standing.

However, the German could be in for a busy summer as there is expected to be a high turnover of players at Anfield.

The Reds are back in action on Monday evening when they head to struggling Leicester in the Premier League.
