Which department Liverpool will strengthen in the summer transfer window has been the source of speculation. The Reds finished the season strongly, securing third spot an qualifying for the Champions League once again after missing out in 2023/24.

Liverpool needs subtle tweaks rather than wholesale changes this summer, but as of yet, no players have arrived. With Euro 2024 set to kick-off next week, transfers will likely fade into the background for the better part of a month.

But of course, that doesn't stop the rumors. One of the players Liverpool is continually linked with is Atalanta's midfield star Teun Koopmeiners. The Dutchman played an integral role in La Dea winning its first major trophy since 1963 and qualifying for the Champions League again.

Koopmeiners reached double figures in terms of goals for the second consecutive season in Serie A — impressive for a midfielder — and had said earlier in the season that he intended to leave Bergamo this summer in favor of a move elsewhere, with the player looking to play in the Premier League.

However, things have changed since those comments. Atalanta won the Europa League, beating Liverpool along the way, and automatic Champions League qualification may change Koopmeiners' mind about remaining in Italy. Furthermore, Atalanta is one of the best-run clubs in Serie A and is in no rush to sell, as its financial state is very good.

Liverpool will face a battle between Juventus and Manchester United to sign Koopmeiners. Like Liverpool, Juve has been linked with the 26-year-old for months, but lacks the financial muscle of Liverpool and is struggling to produce a good enough offer to tempt Atalanta into a sale.

Manchester United could produce the capital, with Atalanta demanding at least $64m (£51m/€60m), but that figure could rise should Koopmeiners have a very good Euro 2024, with Italian source Calciomercato saying the price could rise to as much as $75m (£59m/€70m).

But Liverpool holds a double advantage in that new coach Arne Slot has worked with Koopmeiners previously at AZ Alkmaar and it can offer him Champions League football, with United in the competition Koopmeiners just won a few weeks ago next season, the Europa League. Koopmeiners scored 12 goals and produced five assists in Serie A last season.

Liverpool.com says: Koopmeiners is an exceptional player, but it remains to be seen if Liverpool needs him. Koopmeiners is more of an attacking midfielder, and so in that regard, Liverpool arguably need his midfield partner, Ederson, more. The Brazilian does more of the dirty work in midfield, and this is what Slot needs ahead of next season.
