A top source has confirmed Liverpool are in talks to sign a Man Utd target whose versatility will allow Jurgen Klopp to go all out in his midfield rebuild.

A midfield overhaul is centre of attention at Anfield this summer, though Fabrizio Romano previously stressed arrivals are wanted in two other key positions too. The transfer guru stated Liverpool want back-up at full-back as well as a new centre-half.

Either James Milner or Joe Gomez had previously served as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deputy at right-back. However, Milner will join Brighton as a free agent and Gomez does not offer anywhere close to the attacking output Alexander-Arnold does.

With midfield signings assuming greater significance, logic would dictate Liverpool push to sign a player who can kill two birds with one stone and provide cover at both right-back and centre-back.

According to BILD reporter Christian Falk, that’s exactly what Liverpool are doing after opening talks with Man Utd target, Benjamin Pavard.

The France international, 27, is refusing to sign a new contract at Bayern Munich and as such, will be allowed to leave this summer. Bayern intend to cash in while they still can given Pavard’s current deal only has 12 months left to run.

French outlet L’Equipe recently claimed Man Utd have installed Pavard at the top of their defensive wishlist. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg later named Man Utd among a cluster of clubs in the running for the versatile Frenchman.

However, according to Falk, it’s Liverpool who have stolen a march and opened talks over bringing him to Merseyside.

Liverpool a “hot candidate” for Benjamin Pavard

“Benjamin Pavard has informed the club (Bayern Munich) that he wants to move in the summer,” Falk wrote for Caught Offside.

“His agents are already talking to other clubs. Among them, Liverpool is now a hot candidate.

“Previously, Chelsea and Barcelona were already known to be interested, as well as Italian clubs AC and Inter Milan.”

On the subject of how much Pavard will cost, the fee isn’t as high as you might think for a player who is a regular starter for both Bayern Munich and France.

Indeed, Transfermarkt list Pavard’s valuation around the €35m mark. However, in lieu of his contract status and determination to leave, BILD reported just €30m (approx. £25.8m) should be enough to seal a deal.

As such, Klopp can conceivably tie up his loose ends at both centre-back and right-back through one incredibly modest transfer.

If the Reds do accelerate a move for Pavard and bring him to Anfield, the vast bulk of their transfer budget would remain untouched and available to plunder more midfielders with.
