Liverpool told they ‘could do with’ Premier League free agent as Man Utd are urged to swoop
Former Premier League defender Danny Simpson reckons Liverpool “could do with” a player like Wilfried Zaha and he’s urged former club Manchester United to “bring him back”.
The Reds have recently strengthened in attack with Cody Gakpo arriving in January in a deal worth around £45m, while they also have Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez, Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota at the club.
It is in midfield where Liverpool have a lack of depth with a number of players in Jurgen Klopp’s team underperforming so far this season as they sit tenth in the Premier League.
But former Leicester City and Newcastle United defender Simpson reckons Liverpool should go after Crystal Palace winger Zaha – who is out of contract in the summer – along with Man Utd.
Simpson told Stadium Astro: “He can go wherever he wants, especially on a free contract. I think Wilf [Zaha] plays better when he is the main man.
“He came to Man United. I know he was a lot younger, but if he goes to another top-four or top-six team, then he’s not going to be the main man, so it will be interesting to see where he goes.
“I think someone like Liverpool could do with him at the moment because it’s not happening for them.
“I would bring him back here [Old Trafford]. You have Marcus Rashford as a number nine and Wilfried on the left. That’s some firepower as well.”
Liverpool could have trouble attracting the players they want next season unless they qualify for the Champions League with the Reds currently 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Newcastle.
And Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson thinks the Reds must use their improved performance in the second half of their 3-0 loss to Wolves as motivation going forward.
“We have to think on the next games, that’s what we have in our hands,” Alisson told the club’s official site. “We are not in a position to think too much about what we can do at the end of the season.
“We have to think about what we can do better now and to win the next game that is in front of us. That’s it.
“We are not in the situation where we are confident but we tried. We did a good second half and then we concede again: you don’t score and you concede again, so it’s completely frustrating from my side.
“It looks like in the game we were two steps behind in the first 15 minutes and then we make one step forward. So we still need to do more steps because of the result.
“The step forward was the performance of the second half, it changed a lot, it was two completely different sides if you watch the game. We have to take that for the next game, using the chances that we have and stop conceding silly goals.”
