Liverpool are likely to face strong competition for an Argentina star who Fabrizio Romano is tipping to become of the most-sought after stars in world football in 2023.
The Reds are very much in the hunt for fresh midfield talent over the next two transfer windows with Jurgen Klopp planning for big changes. Indeed, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita likely to leave as free agents, Liverpool are seemingly on the hunt for at least two new additions this year.
Furthermore, both Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are both the wrong side of 30 and showing signs of slowing done. In addition, the 2022/23 season may prove James Milner’s swansong too, with the veteran star turning 37 in January.
With that in mind, Klopp is likely to be at the front of the queue to sign Jude Bellingham, with even his £130m asking price unlikely to deter the Reds.
They are also chasing another talented young midfield star too in Enzo Fernandez. The Argentina star featured in this list of 30 World Cup stars Liverpool are likely to be watching at the World Cup.
That is seemingly with good reason too after Fernandez’s starring role during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Mexico on Saturday.
Fernandez has caught the eye with some stellar displays for Benfica this season. Compared to Zinedine Zidane, the midfielder has played a major role in the Portuguese giants’ progress into the Champions League last 16.
They next face Club Brugges for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition. Progress through to the last eight would only serve to raise Fernandez’s profile even higher.
Now a regular for Argentina, he is likely to be a man in strong demand over the next two windows.
Liverpool face strong competition for Enzo Fernandez
Liverpool are not alone in their pursuit of the 21-year-old either, with Chelsea also reportedly on his trail.
And there are also reports that Manchester United and Manchester City are also keen on acquiring his services.
Now Romano, speaking to Caught Offside, claims demand will be high and expects strong interest from the Premier League.
“It’s still a bit too early to be talking about the best players of the World Cup. But for sure Enzo Fernandez’s impact has been great,” Romano said.
“He’s young, inexperienced, but he looks right at home on the biggest stage with Argentina.
“I wouldn’t be at all surprised if top English clubs will try to jump on him in summer 2023.”
Fernandez is rated in the £44m (€50m) bracket but that value is sure to increase if both he and Argentina enjoy a successful World Cup. His battling qualities make him a tailor-made to succeed in the Premier League. And his incredible work-rate makes him an obvious target for Klopp to pursue.
