Liverpool transfer news as Jordan Henderson set for remarkable January return
Jordan Henderson is being linked with a surprise return to one of his former clubs, with Sunderland reported to be keen on signing the former Liverpool captain.
The England midfielder was born and raised in Sunderland, and spent 13 years at the club from joining the academy as a young boy in 1998 up until his departure to Anfield in 2011.
Henderson overcame criticism and proved plenty of his doubters wrong to establish himself as one of Liverpool's great midfielders of the modern era, taking the captaincy following Steven Gerrard's exit in 2015 and leading the team during its most successful period in decades.

His leadership skills were evident during the early stages of his career at Sunderland, and it is being reported by Football Insider that the Black Cats are working on a sensational deal to re-sign the midfielder.
Sunderland is reportedly keen on signing Henderson during the January transfer window in a bid to boost the club's Premier League promotion push. Sunderland currently tops the Championship with 19 points from its opening nine games, and Football Insider says Ajax will not stand in Henderson's way should he indicate that he wants to return to the Stadium of Light.
It is claimed that Sunderland could offer Henderson a short-term contract until the end of the season, with the option to extend the deal by another 12 months.
Meanwhile, Liverpool is being linked with a move for former Manchester United left-back Alvaro Carreras. The 21-year-old was on United's books for four years between 2020 and 2024, leaving the club on a permanent deal in the summer when he joined Benfica for €6million ($6.6m).
It is claimed by AS that Liverpool is looking for a long-term replacement for Andrew Robertson, who turned 30 earlier this year, and Carreras is under consideration. Carreras is contracted to Benfica until 2029 and it is claimed that Liverpool would have to "dig deep" to persuade the Portuguese club to sell the 21-year-old.
Carreras' previous experience in English football is said to appeal to Liverpool. Although he did not play for United's first team, Carreras turned out 42 times during a loan spell at Preston in the 2022-23 season.
