Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward is in talks with the representatives of Joe Gomez over a new contract at Anfield, claims a report.

The versatile defender struggled to get any game time last season. He also picked up an ankle knock at the end of the campaign, but after a scan it fortunately showed no serious damage.

Gomez did have his 2020/21 season written off though after rupturing his patella tendon on international duty in 2020.

The defender made 20 appearances last season, but only six of those were starts in the Premier League or Champions League.

That inactivity has seen interest from Steven Gerrard. And earlier this summer a report in the Daily Star claimed Villa were preparing an offer of around £30m for the defender.

Gomez himself was said to be fully aware that he may have to push through a move to realise his World Cup dream.

His injury left Gomez unavailable for England and he remains out of favour with Gareth Southgate.

But any plans for an exit at Anfield have been halted by Ward.

The Daily Mirror reports that the Liverpool chief is now looking to tie down Gomez to a new deal.

The 25-year-old and his agents are on “ongoing negotiations” over a contract extension. The former Charlton star is under contract until 2024, but the Reds now want him to pledge his long-term future to the club.

Jurgen Klopp is understood to want to keep Gomez, but the sticking point will be assurances over game time.

Since returning to fitness Gomez has become frustrated about falling behind Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate. Virgil van Dijk is one of the first names on the team sheet and Gomez knows he is battling for one centre-back place.

Joe Gomez labelled ‘outstanding’ by Klopp

The Londoner can also play right-back, but with Trent Alexander-Arnold in the building he knows that route to the first team is also blocked.

Klopp was delighted with Gomez, who played at right-back in the win over Watford in April.

“Joey did well defensively but also offensively as well. He should be really happy about it. It is no surprise we have quality on the bench.

“It’s a position he can play. It’s not his favourite position, his favourite position is centre-half and I get that. He is a really, really outstanding player for us in that position but he can play right back as well.”

However, Alexander-Arnold soon returned and Gomez saw just two Premier League appearances after that date. He was also an unused sub in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

His future will revolve around just how much game time he will be offered under Klopp. Both Matip and Van Dijk turn 31 this summer and that may well be emphasised in talks with Liverpool officials.
