Liverpool urged to avoid Bellingham ‘mistake’ ahead of ‘make or break’ summer for Klopp
The signing of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham alone will not be enough to rebuild Liverpool, according to Robbie Fowler.
It has been a difficult year for the Reds, who are relying on a top-four finish in the Premier League to save their season.
Knocked out of the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup and 27 points behind league leaders Arsenal, Jurgen Klopp’s side are miles off where they were this time last term.
Liverpool won both domestic cup competitions in 2021-22, lost in the Champions League final and finished second in the Premier League with 92 points, one point behind Manchester City, meaning they were essentially two games away from winning a quadruple.
There is a lot of transfer speculation ahead of the summer transfer window, which is seen as a huge opportunity for Klopp to rebuild his squad.
Everyone and their dog knows that Klopp needs to recruit at least two midfielders, while a new central defender would not go amiss.
Bellingham is the club’s number-one target but is expected to cost at least £120million, meaning their whole budget could go into signing the England teenager.
Ex-Liverpool striker Fowler thinks it would be a huge “mistake” to only sign Bellingham.
“If Liverpool do get him and throw all their eggs into one basket where they’re bringing him in and not bringing in anyone else, I do think that would be a mistake,” Fowler told BettingOdds.com.
“Because Liverpool need more than one player, I don’t think they can rely on just Bellingham.”
Fowler believes this summer window will be “make or break” for Klopp at Anfield.
“Don’t get me wrong, you’ll get the occasional idiot who wants him gone, but for me, he is up there with some of the best managers I’ve ever seen,” he said.
“He’s created a team and an environment that are something special and I think he can do that again.
“This is why this summer is so important, it could be make or break for someone like Jurgen Klopp, he’ll know the players he needs and who he wants, and it’s important that the club backs him.”
Liverpool have obviously struggled this term, but they have been without their influential winger Luis Diaz, who Fowler thinks Klopp has greatly missed, claiming the Colombian is the Reds’ “best player”.
“When you think of Liverpool this year, Mane was a massive loss for Liverpool but the man who was brought in to replace him has arguably been their best player, before he got injured,” he added.
“He scored goals, he was big on the assists, unfortunately, he got injured but that’s football for you.
“And when you are building teams, you can’t really depend on one player, that should be the same for Luis Diaz.”
