Liverpool should sign Christian Eriksen as a risk-free midfield addition ahead of a deal for Jude Bellingham next summer, Jose Enrique has said.

The Reds have made a flying start to the summer transfer window, but they look to have concluded their business. Up top, Darwin Nunez has arrived from Benfica and is likely to replace Bayern Munich target Sadio Mane.

Elsewhere, Fabio Carvalho has added to the midfield ranks following his arrival from Fulham.

And in defence, Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay as a Trent Alexander-Arnold understudy.

However, Enrique has urged Liverpool to go after former Tottenham midfielder Eriksen. The 30-year-old is entering free agency after resurrecting his career with Brentford. However, Spurs and Manchester United are also keen.

In the long-term, reports have consistently talked of Liverpool interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

But Enrique urged his former side to sign Eriksen as a solid, risk-free option to rival Thiago Alcantara.

“Another interesting player that could be our [Liverpool’s] solution to our midfield and spending nothing because he is a free agent,” Enrique said of Eriksen on Instagram.

“He is a short-term solution but then we can wait for Bellingham next season.

“He will play if he deserves to play like everyone else. Eriksen is a top player and I believe he can compete for a starting spot in our XI. The season is very long.

“He is that kind of player, like Thiago, but maybe a little bit more offensive. But Thiago is our magician.”

Eriksen returned to the Premier League in January after cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 put his whole career in doubt.

He has now insisted that he will not rush into his decision this summer and will listen to “exciting” proposals.

Liverpool should avoid deal

Eriksen is ready to prove himself at a top-six Premier League club again after reviving his career.

And there is no doubt that, given it is only his wages the Reds would have to cover, it is a somewhat risk-free signing.

However, it is not the sort of signing Jurgen Klopp needs.

The 30-year-old would become the third midfield player in their thirties at Anfield, alongside Thiago and Jordan Henderson.

It is an interesting conundrum given Liverpool’s midfield is ageing, and they could do with a signing in that area this summer.

On balance, though, they are likely to wait for a player like Bellingham next summer.

Indeed, the England star, 18, would be able to offer much more service to Liverpool than Eriksen and has a lot of untapped potential.
