Liverpool v Everton: Three of the best Merseyside derbies

Kieran Beckles

Liverpool and Everton meet in the 228th Merseyside derby on Saturday and Kieran Beckles picks out the best derbies from the Premier League era.

Everton 2 Liverpool 3 (2001)

The best Merseyside derby of the Premier League era, Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win against Everton will live long in the memory for a number of reasons. It had a bit of everything: a red card, a late winner and memorable touchline reactions. Liverpool were looking to keep their top-four challenge alive while competing in the FA Cup and the Uefa Cup. With the score at 2-2 and minutes to go, Gary McAllister defied logic with a superb free-kick from long range that left Gerard Houllier’s jaw on the turf. It was pure Premier League drama at its best.

Liverpool 3 Everton 0 (2011)

With Liverpool struggling under Kenny Dalglish, there wasn’t much to cheer about for Reds fans. However, what better way to improve the morale of the supporters than a resounding victory over your city rivals? It was made all the more sweeter that one of the club’s greatest-ever players Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick for his boyhood club. Each of Gerrard’s goals had something special about it but the man of the match was Luis Suarez, who showed his unselfish side with a devastating performance to help his captain and friend net a treble against the Blues.

Liverpool 4 Everton 0 (2014)

While landslide victories don’t necessary translate to enthralling games, the derby meeting between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield was the precursor to an incredible end to the 2013-14 season. Liverpool would blow away top-four rivals Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur later in the campaign but it was against Everton that Brendan Rodgers’ men turned on the style for one of the first times. Liverpool stormed into a 3-0 lead inside 35 minutes before Suarez scored a fourth after the break. Daniel Sturridge missed out on a hat-trick after blazing his second-half penalty over the crossbar, which proved the only blemish on an otherwise memorable derby.

Honourable mentions:

Everton 1 Liverpool 3 (2001) – Less than six months after their 3-2 win at Everton, impressive goals from John Arne Riise, Gerrard and Michael Owen sealed an impressive away win.

Everton 3 Liverpool 3 (2013) – Months before their 4-0 win, Liverpool played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Everton as the two Merseyside clubs played end-to-end football with little regard for the art of defending.

Everton 2 Liverpool 2 (2012) – Memorable for Suarez’s swallow dive at the feet of then Everton manager David Moyes, who had critised the Uruguayan’s simulation in the lead up to the derby.
