Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea FC LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates from Anfield today

Liverpool vs Chelsea LIVE!

Ten-man Chelsea held on for a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield after defender Reece James was sent off just before half-time.

Chelsea had taken the lead against the run of play when Kai Havertz met a James corner at the near post, and his glancing header looped into the far corner past the helpless Alisson Becker.

But on the stroke of half-time, Liverpool drew level in controversial circumstances when, after a review of the pitchside monitor, Anthony Taylor ruled that James had handled on the line as he kept out a Sadio Mane effort, with the referee awarding a penalty and showing the Chelsea full-back a red card.

The images showed the ball had struck James’ thigh before bouncing up against his arm and while Chelsea felt hard done by, Mohamed Salah kept calm amid the protests to drive home the spot kick.

With his side down to 10 men, Thomas Tuchel made two changes at the break with Havertz and the injured N’Golo Kante making way for defender Thiago Silva and midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

The restructure worked well with Chelsea holding firm against a wave of Liverpool attacks to secure a point which maintained the unbeaten start to the season for both teams.

  • GOAL! Salah levels from the spot

  • GOAL! Havertz loops in header

  • Reece James sent off

  • POLL: Should Reece James have been sent off?

Klopp: ‘A clear penalty'

20:24 , Tom Doyle

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jurgen Klopp said of the penalty: “The goal we got was obviously very deserved. I think it is a clear penalty. We forced it in that situation.”

Tuchel: ‘I was praying' for a draw

20:23 , Tom Doyle

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Tuchel said: “The red card - I’m not even sure any more if it’s the rules or not the rules. You have to accept the decision. He maybe would have changed his mind with moving pictures.

“In the end it maybe would have stayed the same. I don’t like early red cards in general because it spoils the game. In the end it was a tough and hard fight. We showed great resilience and deserved the point.

“We decided to stay in a back five. We wanted to stay active and make it hard to create chances. The first 10 minutes seemed endless. The last five minutes I was actually praying we take what we deserved. It was a hard and a tough one, but a very strong second half defensively.”

Azpilicueta: James red card ‘harsh'

20:04 , Tom Doyle

Asked what he thought about Reece James’ red card, Cesar Azpilicueta replied: “Harsh. I feel sorry for Reece. The referee got advice from VAR to give it. He went to the screen to watch one replay.

“We got the double punishment, red card and a penalty - and two yellow cards in the same action. We were angry.

“But you have to calm down and find a way to fight together as a team. I think the team fought and maybe we had the best two chances in the second half.”

Final word from James at Anfield

19:31 , Daniel Gallan

“That could turn out to be a very important point. Chelsea took everything Liverpool could throw at them even with so many factors conspiring against them. They might even have won this with one of their breaks in the second half. A brilliantly stubborn performance. Perhaps a performance of champions.”

Full time: 1-1

19:28 , Daniel Gallan

Full time: 1-1

It’s honours even. Have to say that is a hard earned point for Thomas Tuchel and his team who fought for every scrap throughout the second half. When you factor in the fact they did so with ten men they deserve even more plaudits.

A missed opportunity for Liverpool who struggled to produce anything more than speculative strikes from distance. But having been so thoroughly bossed in the first half perhaps they’re be satisfied too. Maybe not.

Don’t let the scoreline fool you, this was a cracking contest that ticked a load of boxes.

They all fall down

19:26 , Daniel Gallan

90mins: Five players are left on the floor following a Liverpool corner. Strange. Sure that the time on the clock has nothing to do with the fact that most of them are wearing blue.

Almost a bolt for the Blues

19:20 , Daniel Gallan

85mins: Lukaku finds Kovacic - who has been lively since coming on - down the left and the Croatian hits a drive straight at Allison.

Liverpool then head in the other direction but Salah gets nothing behind his strike and it dribbles towards Mendy who completes his simplest save of the game.

Alexander-Arnold also shoots straight at the ‘keeper who keeps racking up those save stats.

Chelsea delaying things as much as possible

19:16 , Daniel Gallan

80mins: Every team does it, doesn’t mean we like it. This time it’s Azpilicueta doing everything he can to run down the clock, taking an aaaaaage to deliver his throw in. fair play to the men in blue though. They’ve defended superbly with a man down, restricting Liverpool to hopeful shots from distance.

Thiago on, Henderson off

19:07 , Daniel Gallan

74mins: The Liverpool skipper has put in a commendable shift, and came close to a spectacular goal, but he’s looked a little leggy these past few minutes. On comes playmaker Thiago who can unlock any defence.

James with a piece of tactical advice

19:04 , Daniel Gallan

70mins: “Given how deep Chelsea are having to sit, you wonder if Lukaku is the ideal man to leave up front. Even with his hold up play, there is a lot of ground to make up to get close to him.Someone like Werner would give the option of the ball over the top to run into - especially with Liverpool pushing further and further up the pitch.”

Chelsea looking good on the break but Liverpool still in charge

19:02 , Daniel Gallan

68mins: It’s been a cracking game, it really has. Chelsea break throuhg Mount and Lukaku with Azipilcueta and Alonso getting involved too. It ends with a Lukaku volley that’s blocked my Matip.

Later Robertson burns it down the left and floats a cross for Salah but the goal scorer can’t control it and it bounces off his knee.

POLL: Should Reece James have been sent off?

18:56 , Daniel Gallan

Have your say on the controversial decision that has changed this game:

James forsees trouble for Chelsea

18:55 , Daniel Gallan

61mins: “I don’t think Chelsea can risk playing like this for the remainder of the match. It is one way traffic and eventually something will have to give. Werner is warming up. Perhaps Tuchel thinks he needs to give Liverpool something to worry about if they continue to throw everything forward.”

Henderen close to something spectacular before Mendy keeps it level

18:54 , Daniel Gallan

59mins: Liverpool’s skipper collects the ball 30 yards out. He gets it out of his feet, drops his shoulder and unfurls his right leg, caressing the ball with the inside of his boot. It’s inches wide.

Then Fabinho lets fly and forces Mendy into a save. Itt’s not cleared and Robertson sends one towards the Chelsea goal but the ‘keeper is up to that as well.

Shouldn’t be too long now. Liverpool completely bossing this.

That’s how Chelsea can snatch this

18:49 , Daniel Gallan

55mins: It didn’t lead to anything, but Kovacic’s counter did open the field and had Lukaku rid himself of Van Dijk it might have been interesting. Liverpool handled that well, but there is a way towards goal for Chelsea if they can work another break.

Liverpool banging on the door

18:46 , Daniel Gallan

52mins: Van Dijk lets fly from distance and it bobbles and swerves and forces Mendy to dive low. The ‘keeper pushes it to his right where Alexander-Arnold collects and whips in a dangerous cross. It’s cleared, after some ping-pong, but it’s nervy for Chelsea. Anfield urging their players on.

Bad to worse for Chelsea

18:41 , Daniel Gallan

James worries for the men in blue:

“As if going down to 10 men wasn’t bad enough, losing Kante is a major blow for Chelsea. These first moments of this half are going to be pivotal. They need to keep things tight and quieten the crowd. They are ready to party in here and the game could get away from Chelsea pretty quickly if they are not careful.”

Tuchel makes his tweaks

18:40 , Daniel Gallan

45mins: Thiago Silva and Kovacic are on, with Havertz and Kante heading off.

James reports from a breathless Anfield

18:30 , Daniel Gallan

“Well that was a dramatic end to the half. Tuchel and the Chelsea players were absolutely furious about the sending off of James - even if it is hard to argue against the penalty. How do they respond from this? They looked relatively comfortable with the pattern of the game - even though they were conceding possession.

“On the break they looked very dangerous, so now it is a case of whether Tuchel sacrifices a forward or just goes to a back four.He has the personnel to easily switch the system without making any substitutions.”

Half-time 1-1

18:28 , Daniel Gallan

Half-time

Without getting overly hyperbolic, that felt like a Premier League encounter. Both sides filled with desire, aggressive challenges, a sprinkling of quality and a bit of controversy. It’s been great viewing.

Havertz’s looping header put Chelsea in front but Salah’s penalty just before the break levelled things up. James was shown red - rightly so if you’re asking us - which means Tuchel has some tinkering to do to make sure he doesn’t head back to London empty handed.

Catch you in a few.

GOAL! Salah from the spot

18:23 , Daniel Gallan

GOAL!

49mins: On the stroke of half time, Mo Salah sends Mendy the wrong way and puts his team level.

That’s sparked off a row between the sides. Not sure what Chelsea can complain about. It was a clear handball from James. Mendy has been booked in the chaos. Tuchel needs to produce a stirring chat during the break to get things back on track.

He’s given it! Penalty for Liverpool.

18:21 , Daniel Gallan

48mins: What’s more, Reece James has been sent off. The replays suggested that he had used his arm to prevent a goal scoring opportunity. Not much Anthony Taylor could do expect send the England defender for an early shower.

How has that not gone in?

18:19 , Daniel Gallan

47mins: That’s an insane bit of football. A Liverpool corner from the right is headed towards the back post from Mane. Matip meets it and knocks it back. Mendy makes a mess of it and allows Matip another crack with his head but the centre back can only hit the bar. The ball bounces and sits up for Mane who pokes it towards goal where James is on the line. He keeps it out but did it hit his arm? They’re taking a look.

Early change for Liverpool

18:14 , Daniel Gallan

43mins: Roberto Firmino hasn’t looked right since holding his left leg earlier. He’s replaced by Diego Jota who - some might argue - was unlucky not to start. Can he be the one to unlock this Chelsea defence?

Chelsea holding firm

18:12 , Daniel Gallan

41mins: You sense Liverpool are starting to get a little frustrated here. The men in blue looked so well drilled that those in red are beginning to rush their passing. The home side are playing well, and are getting some joy with Salah our on the right, but it’s a little jagged and disjointed still. Credit to Thomas Tuchel.

Mount not far off there

18:06 , Daniel Gallan

35mins: Should Chelsea be 2-0 ahead? Yes, probably. Romelu Lukaku is growing into the game and he threads a ball to Mason Mount on the left but the cross/shot goes across the face.

Liverpool bossing stats

18:03 , Daniel Gallan

32mins: Except the one that counts (couldn’t help it). But they are enjoying 58% possession, have fired off four shots - to Chelsea’s one - and have strung more passes together and had more touches of the ball.

They’ve changed tact here and started going wide with Salah down the right. Maybe that might unlock this resolute Chelsea defence.

Haverts silences Anfield

17:54 , Daniel Gallan

As James says: “That has silenced Anfield. It was a brilliant header by Havertz, but also just a percentage one - aiming to put it in a dangerous area. Aim for the far post and there is a chance it will either go in - or someone will follow it in.It looked like a move from the training ground and worked to perfection.”

GOAL! Kai Havertz loops header in

17:54 , Daniel Gallan

GOAL!

21mins: That’s a delightful header from Kai Havertz who meets it perfectly and dinks it just beyond the reach of Alisson who can’t get there despite back-peddling. Liverpool have been the more dangerous of the two sides but the European champions are ahead.

Liverpool looking dangerous

17:47 , Daniel Gallan

16mins: Both Liverpool fullbacks are offering something on either flank. And Firminho is up to his usual link up play. Some neat interchanges between several men in red has the ball go out for a corner which is easily dealt with, but they’re getting closer.

James Robson at Anfield

17:43 , Daniel Gallan

12mins: “Liverpool the better team so far. Henderson should have put them ahead, but fired wide from close range.

“There are clear signs of where Chelsea can hurt them. On two occasions Mount and Havertz have looked to break, but both been fouled. Liverpool well aware of their threat.”

Henderson, have a go!

17:41 , Daniel Gallan

9mins: Having said that, a delicious diagonal from Trent Alexander-Arnold finds Jordan Henderson at the back post. The Liverpool skipper leaps and meets it with the instep of his left boot. But instead of steering it towards goal he tries to cushion an assist across the face of Mendy. No one is there to meet it. Danger averted. Good move though.

Lots of energy early on

17:39 , Daniel Gallan

8mins: As expected it’s heated out there. Men in red and blue throwing themselves about, lots of pointing and shouting, but not a lot of space.

Youngster fires close

17:35 , Daniel Gallan

4mins: 18-year-old Harvey Elliot flashes one across the Chelsea goal from outside the box. That’s confidence for you.

Where the game will be won and lost

17:11 , Tom Doyle

Van Dijk vs Lukaku could be a battle for the ages, but here are three other areas where the game could be won and lost...

Alonso vs Salah

Ben Chilwell has not played since the Champions League Final victory against Man City and was left out of the England squad yesterday.

Marcos Alonso impressed on the opening day against Crystal Palace and kept his place for the win over Arsenal. With Chilwell overlooked again, it may raise questions.

James vs Robertson

Reece James was superb in the win at Arsenal last weekend, creating one goal and scoring the other.

The right-back could explode as an attacking force this season but he will be up against the outstanding left-back Andy Robertson, who signed a new contract this week. Both will try to force the other onto the back foot.

Henderson vs Jorginho

Liverpool must get their press spot on or risk Chelsea threading passes in behind their high line — as the Blues did at their win at Anfield last season.

Jordan Henderson will marshal the Reds' efforts and will be looking to shut down Jorginho, Chelsea's midfield metronome. Revenge is also on the cards for the Liverpool captain after Italy's win in the Euros.

So, Andrew Robertson makes his first Liverpool appearance of the season as Klopp keeps faith with teenager Harvey Elliott against Chelsea.

Fabinho and Roberto Firmino come into the side along with Robertson, with Naby Keita, Diogo Jota and Kostas Tsimikas dropping out.

As for Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel makes one alteration at Anfield, with N’Golo Kante in for Mateo Kovacic.

Subs: Kepa, Thiago Silva, Kovacic, Werner, Loftus-Cheek, Chalobah, Hudson-Odoi, Chilwell, Ziyech

Liverpool lineup

We are closing in on team news now, with the starting lineups set to be confirmed in the next 15 minutes or so...

Score prediction

15:17 , Tom Doyle

Both sides have been flawless so far, picking up six points without really hitting top gear. A draw would do little damage to either side’s early momentum and it would be no surprise to see this one end all-square.

Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea

Predicted lineups

15:17 , Tom Doyle

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago; Salah, Jota, Mane

Chelsea XI: Mendy; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger; James, Jorginho, Kante, Alonso; Mount, Havertz; Lukaku

Early Chelsea team news

15:16 , Tom Doyle

Romelu Lukaku marked his second Chelsea debut with a goal in the win over Arsenal and will be expected to lead the line again, while N’Golo Kante returned from injury as a substitute in the same game and could make his first start of the season here.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic and Kurt Zouma will all be absent, however.

Early Liverpool team news

15:16 , Tom Doyle

Scotland international Andrew Robertson was back on the substitutes bench for the win over Norwich last weekend and could come back into the lineup despite the decent form of Kostas Tsimikas in his absence.

Fabinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are back in contention, but James Milner remains out.
