Liverpool vs FC Porto - LIVE!

Thiago Alcantara’s sublime long-range strike and Mohamed Salah’s latest individual goal maintained Liverpool’s perfect record in its Champions League group with a 2-0 win over Porto on Wednesday.

Liverpool were assured of advancing to the last -6 even before a fifth-straight victory in Group B, while Porto stayed in second place ahead of a match against Atletico Madrid in two weeks that will help to determine which team qualifies with the English club.

Thiago’s 52nd-minute opener was a thing of beauty, the Spain midfielder meeting a headed clearance with a first-time shot off his laces from 30 yards out that stayed low and flew into the corner.

Salah then scored a 10th goal in his last 10 Champions League games — and his 17th in all competitions this season — by dropping his shoulder as he drifted into the area from the right and shooting low inside the near post in the 70th minute.

Liverpool will look to complete a clean sweep of victories in the group stage, a feat never achieved by an English team, in their closing game against AC Milan.

On the same night, Porto host Atletico, which like Milan have four points. A win would guarantee Porto’s progression to the knockout stage.

Thiago is rather humble as he discusses his goal on BT Sport.

The midfielder says: “I think [I have scored prettier goals] but I’m really glad and happy, for me it’s important and I’ve just come back from an injury and it gives me confidence.

“The most important goal is for the team and how the team plays, how we create our chances, and we’re happy with the young and the experienced players tonight.”

Also in the interview, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain promises to teach the Spanish international the word ‘swazz’.

AC Milan beat Atletico Madrid to mean both teams, plus Porto, are in with a shot of qualifying for the last-16 in next month’s decider.

Liverpool travel to Italy to face Milan while Porto host Atleti, with the Portuguese side on five points, one ahead of their two rivals.

Full-time! Liverpool 2-0 Porto

21:52 , Marc Mayo

A big, satisfied cheer rings around Anfield. The Reds are five from five in Group B.

21:50 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: Milner fancies a go from range and gets it on target, but Costa is equal to his low stinger.

21:49 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: A poor Porto free-kick is cleared as the board for three added minutes goes up.

21:47 , Marc Mayo

88 mins: AC Milan looked the more likely to score in Madrid when we last checked and now lead Atletico through a Junior Messias goal.

At Anfield, Milner is booked for delaying the restart. That’s a one-game ban. Wonder if he meant it...

21:46 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: Henderson looks for Origi and curls the ball just behind the Belgian. The hosts are still probing for a third.

21:44 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Conceicao is the next Porto man hitting the turf, the teenager takes the ice pack to the knee and looks okay to continue.

21:41 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Liverpool are cruising as the clock ticks down, with there still a sense that a third could be on the way.

Milner replaces Oxlade-Chamberlain after an injury to Vitinha delays the restart. The hosts won’t mind that too much.

21:37 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Double change for Porto, who look spent. Grujic and Martinez are on for Uribe and Evanilson.

21:35 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Henderson scuffs the shot wide, trying to go low but missing the target at the near-post.

21:34 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: VAR agrees, it is a foul on the edge of the box but Mbemba cannot escape the booking.

21:34 , Marc Mayo

74 mins: Penalty given as Origi is taken down by Mbemba and the defender rightly protests it as outside the box.

21:31 , Marc Mayo

72 mins: Since the first goal, Liverpool looked much more likely to grab the next (as this blog writer was typing as the goal went in, honest!).

Much more confidence about the hosts since Thiago broke the deadlock.

21:30 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: That’ll do for Salah and Mane, Origi and Fabinho are on in their place.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Porto | Salah

21:29 , Marc Mayo

69 mins: Salah cutting in from the right, shooting with his left. You know the rest!

21:24 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: Chance!

A corner drifts deep and Mane controls on his chest, swiping a left-boot at it to skew his effort off target.

21:23 , Marc Mayo

64 mins: The ball is in the net but Minamino is well offside before the initial shot came in and looped up off a defender.

Changes from Klopp: Tsimikas and goalscorer Thiago are off for Henderson and Robertson, both of which were pre-game fitness doubts.

Porto bring on Conceicao and Vitinha for Taremi and Oliveira.

21:21 , Marc Mayo

62 mins: A lovely shot of Thiago firing in that goal, the technique is flawless.

21:20 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: Wide!

Oxlade-Chamberlain has to reach to get off his shot from the edge of the box and it doesn’t miss by much.

21:19 , Marc Mayo

60 mins: Still goalless in Atletico Madrid versus AC Milan, where the Italians have had double the shots and more of the ball to boot.

21:18 , Marc Mayo

58 mins: Poor from Alisson and a simple pass gives Otavio a chance in the box, although he cannot connect with his cross and the chance goes begging.

21:16 , Marc Mayo

55 mins: Porto haven’t done too badly since the goal and have ventured into the Liverpool box a couple of times.

The home defence is looking a bit more energetic, perhaps as a result of the opener, though and are dealing with it well.

21:13 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: Many people have their opinion on Thiago but you cannot deny that his technique is delightful.

And that was a masterful display of his ability to strike the ball, a clean connection, with the outside of his boot from 20 yards out, that just swept the ball low across the turf and into the far corner.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Porto | Thiago

21:11 , Marc Mayo

51 mins: A stunner from Thiago!

21:09 , Marc Mayo

48 mins: Close!

A Porto free-kick leads to a goalmouth scramble as Cardoso struggles to gain control, before Uribe fires in an effort on the turn - and it misses by an inch.

21:06 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: Porto are up the pitch early on and Taremi meets a cross from the right, but doesn’t get enough on it and nods well wide.

Second-half! Liverpool 0-0 Porto

The visitors get the ball rolling.

21:01 , Marc Mayo

Second-half, coming up...

Who can grab a winner?

The Stats

20:55 , Marc Mayo

Porto have had less of the ball (44-56 per cent possession) and aren’t quite as accurate with it (76 per cent to 81 per cent passes completed) but they lead on shots (six to three).

The problem has been the accuracy of their efforts, with only one of their six going on target - even though five of them came from inside the box.

It’s goalless in the other Group B game between Atletico Madrid and AC Milan, which is good news for Porto.

Manchester City are also deadlocked at home to Paris Saint-Germain while RB Leipzig are hammering Club Brugge 4-0 in Belgium.

Elsewhere, it’s FC Sheriff 0-2 Real Madrid and Sporting CP 2-0 Borussia Dortmund.

Half-time! Liverpool 0-0 Porto

20:47 , Marc Mayo

That’s the break, Mane’s offside goal the big moment of the half that was largely in Porto’s favour.

20:46 , Marc Mayo

45+1 mins: Diaz has another go at the Liverpool defence on the counter and slips a cute pass in to no one.

20:46 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: One added minute.

20:45 , Marc Mayo

44 mins: Liverpool on top as the half comes to a close, Mane drills an effort into a defender to win a corner.

20:43 , Marc Mayo

42 mins: Lovely run across the 18-yard line from Oxlade-Chamberlain and he just doesn’t know what to do with it, eventually losing the ball with a wayward pass rather than shoot.

Porto come down the other end and Taremi is played in one-on-one - and passes the ball to a Liverpool defender. Should have done better too.

20:41 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: Uribe booked for pulling down Thiago on a breakaway that was just leaving the Liverpool box. That’s a one-match ban for the midfielder.

20:40 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: That was very tight but the lines do not lie, Mane was just offside.

It all looked so easy as well, the winger beating his man for pace and calmly rolling the ball home. But we remain goalless.

No goal!

20:38 , Marc Mayo

36 mins: Mane races in and rolls his effort home! But it’s offside!

20:35 , Marc Mayo

34 mins: A Liverpool break falls down after Minamino fails to find Salah. It’s been a touch disjointed from the Reds tonight despite the presence of their top two wingers.

20:33 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Otavio finds space in the box and lashes his left-footed effort way over. A decent half chance, that.

20:30 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: Konate is booked for cleaning out Joao Mario. He looks shocked but he needn’t be.

20:29 , Marc Mayo

28 mins: Salah puts in one of the weaker attempts at winning a penalty after rounding Cardoso and basically falling into the defender.

He’s offside anyway after Costa haphazardly had gave the ball away from a goal kick.

20:28 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: Mbemba struggles to clear a cross and Costa gathers at the second attempt, Liverpool are coming back into this to an extent.

Porto break quickly but cannot force a shot on goal. Naturally, this much-changed backline and its lack of protection have been the biggest issues for Klopp’s side so far.

20:25 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Pepe is off with an injury problem, Cardoso is on. Not a great end to his 100th Champions League start.

20:25 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: Chance!

Costa lazily places a pass straight at Mane and the ball pings off the winger’s head and lands at Salah’s feet. The Egyptian digs out a shot that rolls gratefully back for the goalkeeper to scoop up.

20:22 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: Once again, Evanilson is feeling his back after hitting the deck. Konate didn’t seem to do too much wrong when challenging for the ball with the striker...

20:18 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: The hosts have settled things down now, Porto will probably not be able to maintain their early pace for the whole 90 minutes.

20:15 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: Liverpool win a corner up the other end and Matip’s header is easy for Costa - who immediately looks for Diaz on the counter to cause a fresh tremor of doubt in the home defence.

20:14 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: No penalty, says VAR. That’s just a bad miss, he tried to wait and side-foot it in rather than smack it home. He just waited too long and skewed it wide.

20:13 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: What a miss!

Luis Diaz races clear and rolls it on a plate for Otavio... but he puts it wide with the goal gaping!

The midfielder wants a penalty for Tsimikas coming in behind him and he’s stayed down hurt.

20:11 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: Evanilson is the next to push into the Reds’ area and Konate gets back to nick in a foot and block the shot.

Porto look dangerous when they get the ball moving quickly on the ground, switching the play with speed.

20:09 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Close!

Taremi flicks on a header after a cross from the right and it bounces off Matip, ending up just inches wide of the near-post.

20:08 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: Evanilson stays down after a barge in the back by Morton. He’ll be fine to play on and the free-kick is lofted high before being worked back to the Porto keeper.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: The visitors are certainly the team who look like they need the win more, not that that’s to say that Liverpool are phoning it in.

Salah attempts a breakaway down the right flank but Zaidu is level to him with a nice sliding tackle.

20:03 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: Porto have the first attack and whip in a corner in front of the Kop, Matip heads clear but Liverpool make a tough job out of eventually clearing the ball further up the pitch.

How Group B looks ahead of the game

19:55 , Marc Mayo

Porto can qualify for the last-16 with a victory at Anfield tonight.

That will require Atletico Madrid to lose to AC Milan ahead of the Spanish and Portuguese teams meeting in the final round next month.

Atleti are a point behind Porto in third and will hope to leapfrog them while playing at home tonight.

But Milan could still make a late play for the knockouts with two wins in their final matches, and are currently sat four points off second.

Jurgen Klopp tells BT Sport about the “most experienced bench” he’s ever had before the game.

On Tyler Morton, the German adds: “He’s a smart kid so he knows [what to do]. He’ll be very excited and nervous, we’re human beings that’s how we are.

“He’s a good footballer and no one players a No6 like Fabinho so why should he? He’s a brilliant footballer and we must make sure the spaces are small enough so he can defend them really well.”

The two 5.45pm kick-offs have finished off with Inter Milan defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 in Group D, putting them on the brink of the last-16.

Ajax have won Group C by beating Besiktas 2-1 in Turkey.

With Salah starting, the Egyptian has a chance to improve on his mega record in the Champions League.

He has hit 30 goals in 47 appearances for Liverpool in the competition, only four of which have been penalties.

Only Robert Lewandowski, with 33, has scored more non-penalty goals since Salah joined the Reds in 2017.

Porto are arguably Liverpool’s favourite team to face in European competition.

Nine previous meetings have ended in the Reds’ favour six times with three draws - and the Anfield club have lost at least once to every European team they have faced ten times.

Also against the Portuguese visitors is their record of 18 defeats in 22 trips to England in European competitions.

Their last, the quarter-final trip to Chelsea last season, was their only victory.

As promised a fairly rotated side from Jurgen Klopp with previous doubts Jordan Henderson and Andrew Robertson fit for the bench.

The inclusion of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane is an interesting one and shows same fairly strong intent to win the game, with the pair unlikely to see out the 90 minutes regardless of the result.

And Tyler Morton, the 19-year-old midfielder from Wallasey, gets his European debut having featured off the bench versus Arsenal and played in two Carabao Cup games in recent months.

A big night for Tyler Morton

Early team news

18:34 , Marc Mayo

Andrew Robertson and Jordan Henderson are the big doubts for Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp set to rotate his side.

“We always respect the competition and but we have to think about ourselves, our schedule and the situation of our players first,” he said.

“Hendo, we will see, yesterday maybe he was not 100%, he could play and do pretty much everything but it’s about really being 100% fit so I thought when he came on against Arsenal it was just to see the game out and control it from a rehab point of view to use the few minutes.

“Robbo is similar, both are ok but are both ready to start and play with the schedule coming up we have to make the decisions.

“Whatever line up we show tomorrow night it’s all about winning this game and the next games, that’s what we are here for.”

Good evening!
