Liverpool vs Villarreal LIVE!

Liverpool put one foot in their third Champions League final in five seasons after a 2-0 victory over the least-fancied team in the last four Villarreal.

An own goal from Pervis Estupinan and Sadio Mane’s 20th of the season in a three-minute second-half spell did the damage and the only criticism which could be levelled at Jurgen Klopp’s side was that they should have scored more.

European Cup semi-finals are not supposed to be easy but this was about as comfortable as it gets - arguably less trouble than the 5-2 first-leg victory over Roma at Anfield which set them on the way to a 2018 final defeat against Real Madrid.

Under Unai Emery the visitors had lost just one of 12 away games in Europe, in stoppage time at Old Trafford last September, and had beaten Juventus and Bayern Munich to reach their first Champions League semi-final since 2006.

Villarreal were perceived as presenting an easy option - by virtue of them not being Manchester City or Real Madrid - and Liverpool’s dominance from the off suggested that would play out with LaLiga’s seventh-placed team failing to register a shot on target in the game.

Liverpool player ratings

Thiago Alcantara 8

Almost scored another Champions League wonder goal when rattling the woodwork from range and was one step ahead in possession again.

Sadio Mane 7

Squandered best chance of first-half when heading wide, then saw strike deflected past post. Got his goal and looked furious to be withdrawn.

Mo Salah 7

Lively in first-half in trying to find a way through a barricade of yellow shirts and did just that when setting up Mane soon after the break.

Jordan Henderson’s post-match thoughts

22:05 , Matt Verri

Jordan Henderson was proud of how Liverpool kept their patience and avoided getting frustrated before taking control of the tie.

“They are a very organised team and we knew they would make it difficult,” Henderson told BT Sport.

“It was just important that we kept going and believe that we would eventually break them down. We did that with two good goals.

“First one was a bit lucky. Good build up but a bit lucky, in off the defender and keeper I think. But you need a bit of luck when a team plays with a low block. We got that and it lifted the crowd.

“Majority of the game, the counter-press was really good. It made it difficult for them.

“But the game is still alive and it will be tough in Villarreal.”

Not the most ambitious of performances...

FT: Liverpool 2-0 Villarreal

21:51 , Matt Verri

Easy night’s work for Liverpool.

Villarreal kept them at bay for 45 minutes, but it always felt like the goal was coming.

Two came in as many minutes and they are on the verge of a third Champions League final under Klopp.

21:48 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Just the two minutes added on at Anfield.

It’s been an absolute cruise for Liverpool.

21:46 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Outrageously good from Lo Celso, turns away from three Liverpool players and then pokes it past Fabinho.

He thinks he’s away in midfield, but Fabinho gets back to slide in and poke the ball away. Lo Celso wants a free-kick... Lo Celso doesn’t get a free-kick.

21:45 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Alisson has something to do!

Dia in behind, goes for an ambitious effort. Just about reaches the Brazilian and he topples onto the ball.

He could have watched it roll past him into the back of the net though, the offside flag is up.

21:42 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Konate mops up the loose ball, turns and then draws a foul for his side.

He hasn’t tasted defeat in a Liverpool shirt yet - it’s not about to happen tonight either.

21:38 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Ball drops for Fabinho just inside the box, his shot is blocked almost immediately. Good defending from Albiol.

Klopp turns to his bench again. Alexander-Arnold and Diaz the two to be replaced, with Gomez and Origi on.

Home fans very happy to see Origi again.

21:36 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Almost 3-0!

Diaz picks it up and just flies past Aurier, who is on for Villarreal. Goes for goal from a tight angle, dragged wide of the far post. In fact, it’s out for a throw-in.

21:34 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Visitors are at least starting to see the ball a bit more, even if that hasn’t meant creating a chance yet. They’ve still managed just the one shot all match - none this half.

Another goal for Liverpool and this tie is surely over. It’s a mountain for Villarreal to climb as it is.

21:32 , Matt Verri

74 mins: A Villarreal corner. Here we go, could this be their chance?

That would be a no. Doesn’t beat the first man. Defenders make the long trudge back to the halfway line.

21:30 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Jota and Keita on for the hosts, replacing Henderson and Mane.

Successful night for Mane with that goal - even if he doesn’t look overly delighted about coming off. Huge ovation as he makes his way off though.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

21:27 , Matt Verri

Diogo Jota is imminent for Liverpool. You fancy Jurgen Klopp feels another goal here might just kill this tie.

21:26 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Villarreal haven’t had a touch for about 15 minutes.

Van Dijk strolls forward, goes for goal from almost 35 yards out... Rulli again is all at sea! What is up with him tonight?! Powerful strike, straight at him though and it’s nearly straight through him.

Diaz then drives into the box, looks to pass it into the far corner. Deflected wide.

21:22 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Alexander-Arnold with a sensational cross into the box, Robertson is there at the back post and he volleys home.

Before he can wheel away in celebration, the offside flag goes up. Correct decision again from the linesman.

21:20 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Lo Celso now into the referee’s book, as Villarreal’s struggles continue. He lost the ball to Robertson and then hauled the left-back down.

Got to think the away side would be delighted if this finished 2-0 now, they’re in real trouble at the moment.

21:18 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Wouldn’t say there’s been a noticeable shift in approach from Villarreal. They look a bit stunned really, which is fair enough.

Salah down in the box, as Torres puts an arm on his chest. Nothing given.

21:15 , Matt Verri

58 mins: And now Anfield is in full voice, as their side have taken full control of this tie.

Liverpool continue to knock the ball around with ease. What do Villarreal do now?!

GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Villarreal | Sadio Mane 55'

21:13 , Matt Verri

Villarreal are being cut apart. Salah cuts inside and beats the challenge to start the move.

Salah then gets it back, pokes it through to Mane and he finishes well at the near post.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Villarreal | Pervis Estupinan OG 53’

21:12 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have been piling on the pressure since the break and they finally have the opening goal.

Comes wide to Henderson, his cross takes a big deflection off Estupinan. Floats over Rulli and into the far corner.

21:08 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Great work from Alexander-Arnold to keep the ball in play and then win a corner for his side. Up come Konate and Van Dijk again.

It’s Mane who heads it back into the six-yard box, Van Dijk flicks it on, drops for Fabinho... GOOOO.... no. Offside.

Linesman is right too, Van Dijk was beyond the last man.

21:05 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Salah dragged back by Estupinan right on the edge of the box. Yellow card for the Villarreal left-back and a free-kick for Liverpool in a great position.

This will be whipped with pace into the box. Or not - Alexander-Arnold just clips it in and Albiol heads it out.

21:04 , Matt Verri

46 mins: Torres almost puts Liverpool in front with less than a minute played of the second half!

Salah’s cross in, the Villarreal defender heads it towards his own goal. Luckily for him, it’s straight at Rulli.

Back underway!

21:03 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running again at Anfield.

Can Liverpool find their way through the mass of yellow shirts?

20:58 , Matt Verri

12 shots, six corners, 67% possession... everything is in Liverpool’s column apart from the one stat that matters. 0-0.

Villarreal managed just one shot and really failed to muster any real counter attacks of substance.

What a goal that would have been...

20:53 , Matt Verri

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

20:50 , Matt Verri

Half the job done for Villarreal, who’ve been disciplined in their work, canny with their time-wasting and brave enough in possession to buy the occasional bit of breathing space.

But Liverpool have so much quality that you think they’ll need a bit of luck to survive another 45 minutes.

HT: Liverpool 0-0 Villarreal

20:47 , Matt Verri

It’s goalless at the break at Anfield.

Liverpool completely on top, dominating possession and they’ve had a couple of decent chances. Villarreal continue to frustrate them though.

45 minutes into this tie and Unai Emery will be thrilled, with the Reds frustrated so far.

20:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Liverpool looking to really up the pace before the break. Goal now would be massive.

Cross swung into the box, volleyed away by Villarreal. They’re still holding firm.

20:43 , Matt Verri

What a strike from Thiago! He absolutely hammers an effort at goal from 30 yards and it smacks off the outside of the post, behind for a goal kick.

Stunning effort.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Rulli seems so reluctant to catch the ball - harmless cross floated in and he opts to punch it. He at least makes decent contact this time.

Diaz has space to run at Foyth, who gets his body in the way and then wins a cheap free-kick. Good defending, even if the home faithful disagree.

If there’s one thing that isn’t going to make the Liverpool fans feel better about the decision, it’s Rulli taking an age before lumping it up the pitch.

20:39 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Very scrappy on the halfway line, challenges flying in and nobody getting anywhere. Lo Celso throws himself into two sliding challenges.

Villarreal fans love it - the uglier the better for them and Unai Emery!

20:36 , Matt Verri

There is finally some space out there for Liverpool, as Robertson drills it wide to Alexander-Arnold.

He plays a wonderful first-time ball into the box, Salah shins it over the bar. Real opportunity.

20:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: CLOSE!

Liverpool are starting to pile on the pressure. Mane hits a bouncing ball from just outside the area, flicks off Albiol and it’s just wide of the far post. Rulli at full stretch, not sure he was gettign there.

Robertson into the near post, headed on by Diaz. Falls to Salah who smacks it at goal on the volley, Lo Celso with a brilliant block as he throws himself in the way.

20:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Diaz again cuts inside and takes the early shot. Straight at Rulli, who once again decides the best course of action is to parry it straight back into the box.

Luckily for him it doesn’t find a Liverpool shirt. Reds stay on the attack, Salah plays it in... cleared.

Van Dijk then adjudged to have fouled Chukwueze, who painfully runs into the Liverpool man. Yellow card for Van Dijk.

20:30 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Alexander-Arnold brought down 25 yards out by a clumsy challenge from Coquelin, this is a really promising position.

Would imagine there won’t be any Liverpool players getting the ball off the right-back.

It is indeed Alexander-Arnold... straight into the wall. Torres the man to get his head in the way. Wasn’t really worth the big build-up.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

20:28 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have had a bit of joy when getting those early deliveries in from wide positions but have found it difficult to get in behind down the flanks.

The two holding midfielders are playing right on the toes of the centre-halves and that’s allowing the full-backs to get out and get tight.

20:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Better from Liverpool, they get Salah involved in the final third.

Ball clipped over the top to Mane, he lays it back to Salah. The Egyptian runs onto it and curls it towards the far corner first-time, just too much on the shot and it flies over the bar.

20:25 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Alexander-Arnold receives it from Diaz, he looks to fire it back across goal. Blocked behind. Corner.

Drops for Fabinho, plays it to the right-back again. Coquelin down in the box, holding his head. Referee stops play.

20:24 , Matt Verri

23 mins: POST!

Not sure how, but that has hit the woodwork. Ball floated wide to the right where Henderson is free, volleys it back into the box. It’s too close to the near post though.... and actually hits the woodwork as Rulli half lets it go.

We’ll give the goalkeeper the benefit of the doubt and say he had that under control.

20:23 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Thiago drifts insde, then appeals for a free-kick for handball. Nothing given.

Diaz charges at Foyth though and forces him out of play, quickly winning the ball back for the Reds. Great play from Diaz.

20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Henderson thinks he’s won a throw-in for Liverpool, the linesman disagrees... only one of their opinion’s matter.

The Liverpool captain makes his thoughts on that very clear, referee over to warn him about the dissent.

Chukwueze briefly finds space straight down the middle, quickly closed down by Konate and Van Dijk though and the chance goes.

20:17 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Noise goes up another level, as Robertson wins the ball back and blasts it into the box. Deflected behind for a corner.

The left-back takes it himself, headed out to the edge of the box. Thiago fizzes a shot in, Rulli for some reason decides to punch rather than just catching in. Offside flag makes it all irrelevant.

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Diaz cuts inside, gets the shot away. Straight at Rulli who slightly fumbles it but can quickly gather at the second attempt.

Danjuma looks to make the run in behind for the visitors, once again he’s offside though.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

20:14 , Matt Verri

That’s a big chance for Liverpool - a terrific cross from Salah and run from Mane, almost identical to the combination from Mahrez and De Bruyne that opened the scoring for City last night.

20:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

Mane has to put Liverpool in front! Salah is away down the right, cuts inside and curls a lovely cross into the box.

It’s slightly behind Mane though, who has made a brilliant run. He’s onside, but can’t direct the header at goal.

20:12 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Well then. First corner of the night for Villarreal, as Alexander-Arnold boots the ball straight into Fabinho.

Poor ball from Parejo, Liverpool can clear. Played back in and Danjuma is in behind... Van Dijk hacks away the cross. Offside flag goes up now anyway.

20:09 , Matt Verri

8 mins: NEARLY!

Konate is proving unstoppable at corners! He gets up at the back post, heads it into the six yard box and it bounces off Mane. Villarreal can clear.

Would have been a simple finish for Mane had he controlled.

20:08 , Matt Verri

7 mins: First chance for Villarreal to go on the attack as it’s played wide to Foyth. He has space to drive into.

Brings it forward and then hammers a pass straight to Robertson. Doesn’t take long for Villarreal to get back into their solid shape though!

Lo Celso gets across to close down Mane, Liverpool have their first corner of the match.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Thiago looks for the long ball over the top, Salah can’t bring it under his spell though and it’s out for a goal kick.

Once again, Rulli in no rush to take it. Anfield less than impressed. Liverpool have got to keep the tempo high if they’re going to cause the visitors problems.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

20:04 , Matt Verri

We’re not two minutes in yet but Villarreal have set their stall out. Francis Coquelin on the left of a midfield four, 30 seconds taken over their first goal-kick.

It’ll be unto the pace of Danjuma and Chukwueze on the break to provide some relief.

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Liverpool attacking the Kop in the first-half after Villarreal won the toss. Advantage Emery!

No surprise to see the early pattern of the match is Liverpool passing the ball around comfortably at the back, with Villarreal happy to sit off.

We are underway at Anfield!

Villarreal have done one of the shortest warm-ups you will ever see from a professional football side. They came out 25 minutes before kick-off and with ten to go they’re back in the dressing room.

Ten minute warning!

19:50 , Matt Verri

Kick-off fast approaching.

Perfect evening at Anfield, and it will be an incredible atmosphere as ever. Huge, huge test for Villarreal against probably the most in-form team in the world right now.

Thoughts from Unai Emery

19:44 , Matt Verri

“They have a very clear identity at Anfield.

“It’s Liverpool, I think it’s the best Liverpool that I have known, but I take that as motivation to play the perfect game and to beat Liverpool at their best.

“Liverpool know that we are here because we have been able to compete. For us, that means the challenge is greater.

“We’re playing the favourites but we want to be us and to play on the front foot. The journey does not have to end, we want to be in charge, to create chances.

“In normal conditions they are superior to us, but we have our own ideas, individually and as a team, to allow us to compete.”

How the quadruple charge stands

19:32 , Matt Verri

It could well be an historic end to the season for Liverpool as they continue to fight on all fronts.

The Carabao Cup is already in the bag, with a return to Wembley secured for next month when they face Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

That leaves the Premier League, where they trail Manchester City by one point with five matches remaining, and the Champions League.

Could they? Well it’s nearly May and it’s still very much on!

This match has got a lot to live up to after last night’s excitement.

More of the same please!

Good memories for Liverpool

19:13 , Matt Verri

Liverpool beat Villarreal 3-0 when the Spanish side came to Anfield in the Europa League semi-finals back in 2016.

That was Jurgen Klopp’s first season in charge, before he helped the Reds get back into the Champions League.

They went through to the final, where they lost to a Sevilla side managed by.... Unai Emery!

Beatles would be proud...

18:57 , Matt Verri

Coquelin is fit to start for the visitors in midfield, alongside Parejo and Capoue.

Lo Celso will be looking to continue his good form, while Danjuma and Chukwueze certainly have the ability to cause Liverpool some real problems on the break.

Villarreal team

18:50 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Rulli, Foyth, Albiol, Torres, Estupinan, Parejo, Capoue, Coquelin, Danjuma, Lo Celso, Chukwueze

Subs: Asenjo, Jorgensen, Gaspar, Alcacer, Iborra, Trigueros, Dia, Pena, Mandi, Gomez, Pedraza, Aurier

18:48 , Matt Verri

Konate, Henderson and Diaz all come in for Liverpool then, as Matip, Keita and Jota drop to the bench.

Diaz could well be crucial for the hosts as they look to break down a solid Villarreal side, while Konate was in fine goalscoring form in the previous round.

Firmino not in the squad as expected.

Liverpool team

18:42 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Salah, Mane, Diaz

Subs: Adrian, Kelleher, Milner, Keita, Gomez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Jota, Origi, Matip, Williams, Elliott

Henderson: European nights at Anfield are incredible

18:38 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have often taken full advantage of playing at Anfield in the second legs of European ties to stage incredible comebacks, but tonight they’re at home in the first leg.

Henderson is confident the atmosphere will be just as impressive as it has been in the past on those famous nights.

“Anfield is always special,” Henderson said. “European nights at Anfield are always incredible.

“Hopefully that is the case again, which I am sure it will be. We need to perform to the levels we’re capable of to get the crowd on those levels – it’s a two-way thing.

“The crowd, I am sure, will be there and we need to make sure we’re there as well, which I am sure we will be.”

No shortage of away fans in Liverpool...

18:30 , Matt Verri

Lo Celso a man transformed

18:24 , Matt Verri

Of all the supposed Premier League rejects, misfits and cast-offs who make up Unai Emery’s Villarreal squad against Liverpool tonight, none feel as important to their hopes of another Champions League upset as Tottenham loanee Giovani Lo Celso.

Lo Celso has added guile and grit to Emery’s midfield and was outstanding as Villarreal eliminated first Juventus then Bayern Munich in the knockouts.

Lo Celso was man of the match in the 1-0 win over Bayern in the quarter-final first leg, and pivotal again in the subsequent 1-1 draw in Germany, playing both games with a fizzing intensity which the Bundesliga giants found difficult to contain.

Klopp: Emery is a world-class coach

18:09 , Matt Verri

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has moved to praise opposite number Unai Emery ahead of his team’s Champions League semi-final meeting with Villarreal.

“Unai is a detail-obsessed manager who prepares for all different situations in the game and that’s what his team is executing,” Klopp said.

“It’s really, really good, different ways to build-up, different ways to press, different ways to react on results.

“He is a world-class coach is doing an incredible job there.

“Our job is to make life difficult as possible for them and that is what we will try and do over the two legs.”

Villarreal have proven to be a hugely difficult opponent and one capable of hitting teams on the break.

Liverpool, however, have so many different points of attack, it’s hard to see them not scoring. The Spanish side would surely be satisfied with a narrow defeat that keeps them in the tie heading back to Spain.

Liverpool 2-1 Villarreal.

Villarreal team news

17:54 , Matt Verri

Villarreal boss Unai Emery is facing a selection dilemma ahead of tonight’s clash.

Gerard Moreno sustained a muscle injury in the La Liga win over Getafe earlier this month and is set to be sidelined until May.

As such, it remains unclear as to who will replace the Spanish international at Anfield and lead the attack alongside the impressive Arnaut Danjuma, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

Media reports in Spain have suggested that Tottenham loanee Giovani Lo Celso could be deployed in a more advanced role, potentially moving Manu Trigueros into midfield.

Paco Alcacer is another option through the middle, while former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin recently returned to training in a boost for Emery.

Liverpool team news

17:46 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have little in the way of fresh injury concern, although Roberto Firmino looks likely to remain absent.

The Brazilian international missed the wins over Manchester United and Everton with a foot injury and although he’s now back working outside, is not expected to be fit for tonight.

“I don’t think [he is ready] yet,” said Klopp. “He is running outside and that’s good, obviously, but I am not sure. Maybe somebody will surprise me afterwards and tell me, ‘Yes, Bobby is in.’ [I will have] open arms, but I don’t think so.

“Apart from that, no [new injuries] that I know yet.”

Jordan Henderson started on the bench for Sunday’s Merseyside derby, along with Luis Diaz, and both made telling contributions, so could potentially come into the side.
