Liverpool's Darren Till earns welterweight title shot against Tyron Woodley at UFC 228

Tyron Woodley will defend his welterweight belt against Liverpool’s Darren Till at UFC 228 in Dallas, Texas on September 8th.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the news to ESPN after the UFC had been looking for a main event for the card. It is assumed that a match up between Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington and Tyron Woodley would have been made however the interim champ is unable to fight on that date due to having surgery to fix a nasal issue.

Till, a Liverpool fighter on the rise is coming off a unanimous decision win over Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. Undefeated in over 17 fights Till now has a shot at becoming just the second British champion in the UFC after Michael Bisping who recently retired. Till took to Twitter to tell Woodley to accept the fight.

Meanwhile Woodley who has been out of action for over a year due to shoulder surgery is coming off back to back title wins against Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson. Woodley hasn’t been defeated in the octagon since 2014 against Rory MacDonald.

So what does this mean for Colby Covington? Dana White told ESPN that Colby Covington will be stripped of the UFC welterweight interim title once the fight starts.

UFC 228 will also feature a women’s flyweight title fight between Nicco Montaño and Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event.
