Liverpool’s most valuable player has been revealed – and it’s not who a lot of fans might expect it to be.

The Reds’ squad is littered with big-name stars who could expect to fetch a decent price in the transfer market. The likes of Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are regarded among the best players in the world.

None of those are ranked as Liverpool’s most valuable though, according to The CIES Football Observatory. The research group has estimated the values of each club’s top players, and has placed Darwin Nunez top at Anfield.

The striker’s value is estimated between $95m (£73m/€86m) and $120m (£92m/€109m), placing him among some of the world’s most valuable players.

Nunez of course signed for Liverpool in 2022 in a deal that could rise to $111m (£85m/€101m), making him the club’s most expensive signing of all time. The Uruguay international has had a mixed couple of seasons since arriving on Merseyside, and currently finds himself out of favor under Arne Slot.

Fresh from a superb first season at Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham is rated as the world’s most valuable player with a price of up to $309m (£236m/€280m). Erling Haaland is the Premier League’s most expensive star, with his value estimated to be up to $283m (£217m/€257m).

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United are also estimated to have more valuable players than Liverpool. Bukayo Saka (up to $192m/£147m/€174m), Cole Palmer (up to $141m/£108m/€128m) and Rasmus Hojlund (up to $130m/£101m/€120m) ranking above Nunez.

There are other familiar names on the list for Liverpool fans. Florian Wirtz (up to $148m/£113m/€134m), Jamal Musiala (up to $133m/£102m/€121m) and Benjamin Sesko (up to $126m/£96m/€114m) have all been linked with the Reds over the past year, and all three are ranked as the most valuable players at Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig respectively.

Liverpool.com says: There are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration with these estimations. Clearly, Nunez’s fee from his move from Benfica to Liverpool plays a big part in his valuation, but so will his age, and the number of goals he’s scored, even if he hasn’t convinced at Anfield.

His age obviously gives him an advantage over the likes of Salah, Van Dijk and Alisson. We’d wager Alexander-Arnold might actually be able to command a larger fee if he were to be sold, but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that – or him leaving for free for that matter.
