Local ranked teams preparing for small-school playoffs

Feb. 3—Stonewall's ranked basketball teams will compete in the Class A Area IV bracket when playoffs begin next week.

Stonewall's Class A District Tournament will include Strother and Wetumka.

Heading into a Friday night showdown with local rival Allen, the sixth-ranked Stonewall boys were sporting a 22-0 record.

CLASS A AREA IV

Other ranked teams in Area IV include No. 13 Liberty, top-ranked Okay, and No. 20 Red Oak.

Stonewall boys head coach Wes Moreland said his team is ready to embark on its playoff journey.

"We are excited about our draw. This group has been playing extremely well all season and we are looking forward to the challenge," Moreland told The Ada News. "There's a lot of good teams in our area. We are just taking it one game at a time and hope to make a long playoff run."

The Stonewall girls are sitting in the No. 16 spot in Class A and were sporting an 18-4 record before their date with Allen.

Other ranked girls teams in Area IV include No. 3 Quinton, No. 18 Porum, No. 8 Red Oak, No. 10 Ripley, and No. 20 Summit Christian.

Despite all those potential roadblocks, Stonewall head coach Dillon Monday said he wasn't upset with his team's playoff assignment.

"I like our playoff draw. Obviously, it's all about matchups and how your kids play that day, but I think we have a good opportunity to make a deep run. I'm excited for this group of girls and ready to see how far they can go," Monday told The Ada News.

Stonewall's Regional Main Site is Quinton High School and the Area Tournament will be played in Okmulgee.

CLASS A AREA II

Both of Allen's ranked Class A teams were sent to the Area II bracket. The Mustangs are 20-1 and ranked No. 9 heading into the matchup with Stonewall. The Allen girls are No. 5 and were sitting at 18-2 ahead of Friday's contest.

Allen will host Konawa and Verden in district tournament action.

Allen's regional main site is Union City, and the Class A Area II Tournament will be played in Chickasha.

"I think our draw is good. It really seems like all of the Areas are pretty even," said Allen girls coach Dottie Slabaugh. "We will see a lot of teams that are unfamiliar to us. We are going to have to play good teams all the way through. I am thankful to have a District and first-round Regional game at home before we have to hit the road. "

Both Tupelo teams will get to host a Class B District Tournament as a part of the Area II bracket. Included in that district are teams from Stuart, Pittsburg, and Haileyville.

Calvin is also in the same regional group as Tupelo and will play in a Class B District at Stringtown that also includes Kinta and Whitesboro.
