Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan has bagged his next movie role and it comes in the shape of Western Last Dollar.

Set in the 1880s, the film will see Monaghan act alongside Jacqueline Bisset and Dermot Mulroney. Last Dollar is the directorial debut of William Shockley.

Film lovers will know Bisset from the popular 1968 film Bullitt where she worked with Steve McQueen, with Mulroney appearing in films such as My Best Friend's Wedding and recently Scream VI. Monaghan starred as Merry in the Lord of the Rings franchise, Lost, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The film is brought to the screen by production and distribution company Thunderbird Pictures and, as reported by Deadline, is a story of love and vengeance. It features a young man, who has endured a horrific event and is now trying to find his path, and a woman who is struggling with the consequences of trying to achieve her dreams.

It's set against a background of a rapidly changing social landscape, where power rules and reality itself comes into question.

Bisset is to play Vivian Villeré, the overly protective Madame and owner of the Purgatory Saloon, with Monaghan playing her longtime ambitious assistant, Ned Duxbury.

Casting also includes Joe Bell actor Blaine Maye, 9-1-1 star Sarah Cortez, The Power's Chris Mulkey, Emancipation's Ronnie Gene Blevins and Somewhere in Queens star David St. Louis.

Monaghan has shared a photo from the new movie on social media in which he can be seen riding a horse in a slightly disheveled suit, captioning it: "Any day spent with a horse is a good one."

He isn't the only Lord of the Rings franchise star to be announcing a new role recently either, as Rings of Power's Morfydd Clark has landed a role in new revenge thriller Uncle.

Last Dollar is yet to receive a release window. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power streams on Prime Video.
