Louis Moult thinks on-form Dundee United striker Sam Dalby is a flashback to himself when he first arrived in Scotland.

The on-loan Wrexham striker is at the top of the Premiership scoring charts with five goals in his last six games. Moult believes Dalby was similar to himself when he made the move from Wrexham to Motherwell back in 2015. Moult said: “Sam’s done really well and he’s a lovely guy. I love to see good people doing well. He’s got a fantastic attitude and has all the attributes you need. He’s an honest, hard working person. He reminds me a little bit of myself when I was coming up here.

“I was 22 years old and although Sam is a bit older (24), he has that raw ability and work ethic to succeed in the game. Lately you’ve seen quality touches and some really good finishing from him. I’d like to think me and him could form a really good partnership.”

Moult is now back and was on the bench for the weekend draw at Rangers. He will now be pushing to make an impact against St Mirren. Moult was two in two before the injury and the only striker waiting to get off the mark is Jort van der Sande. He believes once the Bonaire international scores then he won’t stop.

Moult acknowledged: “Jort is in the mix as well. He’s a similar player and it can only be positive for the football club to have those options. For Jort, it’s just about getting that first one and confidence will fly back. I’ve been in that situation before.

"I’ve gone 17 games without a goal back in England and it’s just one of those situations where you need the ball to come off your backside and go in – then you’ll get another and another. The floodgates can open. He just needs to keep his head down and grafting, which he has done.”

Dundee United already have two wins over St Mirren this season but Jim Goodwin knows his old team are back to their old ways.

Goodwin stated: “We’ve had a couple of wins against them in the cup and the league at Paisley last time out. They have definitely turned a corner, there is no doubt about that. They are looking more like the team they were last season and the season before, finishing in the top half of the table.

“They’ve changed shape a little bit. They have switched to a 3-4-3 that we were playing at the start of the season. They are unbeaten in their last four and won three of those games. They are scoring goals and it will be a difficult task.”

United sit fourth but Goodwin knows how quickly things can change in the Premiership and St Mirren’s revival is a prime example of that. That is why feet are firmly being kept on the ground at Tannadice.

He added: “It shows how quickly things can change and that is the message I keep giving to my group and players. That is why we can’t get carried away because you can very much see yourself on the wrong end of the results, if you get too comfortable and too relaxed.

“Stephen Robinson has done a terrific job and the staff and player there have been excellent. It is no surprise to me that they have managed to claw themselves back into contention for the top six.”
