"I love the FA Cup and the players will be under no illusions as to how important it is" - Cheltenham Town boss Michael Flynn ahead of Salford City away
Michael Flynn believes Cheltenham Town are a much-improved team since their 2-1 league defeat at Saturday's FA Cup second round opponents Salford City.
The Robins took the lead through Ethon Archer's first EFL goal after 48 minutes, but a double from substitute Hakeeb Adelakun turned the game around to seal three points for the Ammies on September 14.
"We played well there and came away with nothing, but we are a different team now," Flynn said. "We are more solid and we have more of a threat in us.
"We have to make sure we do the business on Saturday, turn up and give our all and hopefully it's us in the hat on Monday night."
Flynn boasts an impressive record in the competition, having guided Newport County AFC to the third round twice, the fourth round once and the fifth round for the first time since 1949.
The Exiles' runs included triumphs against Leeds United, Leicester City and Middlesbrough along with high profile ties against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. He also guided Walsall to round four two seasons ago.
"I love the FA Cup and the players will be under no illusions as to how important it is to me, the football club and the supporters," he said.
Flynn has only tasted victory over Salford once as a manager in 10 previous meetings, but that did come in the FA Cup second round, at Newport in 2020/21, when he presided over a 3-0 victory.
He has made no secret of his dream tie should Cheltenham progress to round three.
"My first choice would be to go to Anfield and I'd be loving life because that would be a dream for me," he said.
"Other than that, it's about bringing in the most income for the club, so any of the big clubs like Man United, Arsenal, Newcastle, Chelsea or Man City and I'd love to see Pep again.
"Although I am not sure I would fancy going to the Etihad when they are wounded because they can really punish teams and it can be a lonely place when your backs are against the wall, so maybe we need to try and stay away from Pep for now!"
Flynn understands the importance of reaching the third round, which could have a significant impact on how much he is able to strengthen the squad during the January window.
"It'll have a bearing," he said. "But I know how the club is run and I respect it.
"Say we were to go on and earn £250,000 for example, I would not be expecting all of that for January because that would be very naïve and selfish.
"I'd like a bit more if we could, but would also want a bit put away for a rainy day to help secure the club's future until new investors or owners are found, we sell players, or have another cup run. It's nice to have a contingency pot.
"We are not blessed with money, but we have to get on with it and the board do a really good job with limited resources. They'll never jeopardise the club because they have its best interests at heart."
Flynn will be cheered on by not only around 400 travelling fans at the Peninsula Stadium, but also his wife Victoria and sons Edward and Samuel.
"They'll be there and I am hoping Edward brings us good luck because he's been on every journey with me since his first game when he was mascot at Newport and we beat Walsall," Flynn said.
"He was two then and he's been on every journey with me since, so he doesn't want to miss Saturday."
