Lowes turned his fourth pole position start into a debut win in the first race of the day at the Northamptonshire circuit with Byrne himself admitting the 22-year-old is the coming man in the paddock.

That victory gave Lowes a mathematical chance of lifting the title and the WFR Honda rider increased his odds even further with victory in race two.

Lowes had to do it the hard way at Silverstone, bullying his way past Byrne on the final lap to claim the win ahead of the two-time champion with Tyco Suzuki’s Josh Brookes third.

The 25-point haul for Lowes leaves him third in the standings, 24 shy of championship leader Byrne (608) with Brookes in second (599).

Reigning champion Tommy Hill’s chances of retaining his title all-but went up in smoke as he ended seventh to sit fourth overall – 42 points shy of Byrne.

Tommy Bridewell started on pole in the second race of the day at Silverstone but it was championship leader Byrne who led into the first corner.

By lap two Samsung Honda’s Michael Laverty found the front and started a tit-for-tat exchange with Byrne while race one winner Lowes again fought back from a poor start to get into third.

Byrne and Laverty then traded blows lap after lap with the race winner looking certain to come from those two.

However that was to reckon without the 22-year-old Lowes who found his way into the lead just as championship contender Brookes also thrust himself into contention in third.

Despite their dicing these three were well clear of the rest of the field and it was Byrne who took the lead back on lap 11 when rookie Lowes had a moment and allowed the two-time champion through.

It wasn’t finished there.   After more to-ing and fro-ing Lowes eventually barged his way past Byrne on the final lap to take a famous win.
